1) What size PVC pipe can Oatey 31926 regular body clear cement handle?
Oatey 31926 regular body clear cement works on all schedules and classes of PVC pipe and fittings up to 4 inch for Schedule 40, and up to 2 inch for Schedule 80 with interference fit. Above those sizes you need a heavier body cement, so for large diameter Schedule 40 drain lines this is not the right can.
2) Can Oatey 31926 clear cement be used on potable water lines, or is it drain only?
Both. The 31926 cement is rated for DWV, pressure pipe, potable water and electrical applications, and it complies with NSF/ANSI 61 health effects requirements. It also meets ASTM D2564, the standard spec inspectors look for on PVC solvent cement.
3) How cold can it be when I glue PVC with Oatey 31926?
Recommended application range for the 31926 cement is 40 F to 110 F (4 C to 43 C). Below 40 F the solvent weld is outside the recommended window, so for winter work in an unheated crawlspace either warm the space or use a cement formulated for low temperatures.
4) Can I use this cement on CPVC or ABS pipe?
No. The 31926 is formulated for PVC only. CPVC needs a CPVC-specific cement and ABS needs ABS cement or, for an ABS-to-PVC joint, a transition cement. Using PVC cement on CPVC hot water lines is a failed joint waiting to happen.
5) Do I need a separate primer with Oatey 31926 PVC cement?
The 31926 is a clear solvent cement, not a one-step all-in-one, so where your local code calls for purple primer on PVC you still buy primer separately. Oatey's primers and cements are all certified to UL Greenguard Gold. A dauber is included in the can.
6) Will clear PVC cement pass inspection, or does the inspector want to see purple?
That is a local call. Clear cement like the 31926 leaves no visible evidence that a joint was made, and many jurisdictions require purple primer so the inspector can see the joint was prepped. The cement itself meets ASTM D2564, so if your inspector only wants to see primer, use purple primer under this clear cement.
7) Is Oatey 31926 cement legal in California air quality districts?
Yes. It is a low VOC solvent cement that meets the California South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) 1168/316A requirements or BAAQMD Method 40, which is what gets it onto jobs in those districts.
8) How hot can a joint made with Oatey 31926 run in service?
Maximum use temperature for the cured joint is 60 C (140 F). That covers normal DWV and cold potable work. It is not a substitute for CPVC on a hot water supply line.
