OATEY 31925 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size PVC pipe can Oatey 31925 clear cement be used on?
Oatey 31925 Advanced Clear regular body cement handles all schedules and classes of PVC pipe and fittings up to 4 inch on Schedule 40, and up to 2 inch on Schedule 80 with interference fit. Above those sizes you need a medium or heavy body cement instead, because regular body doesn't carry enough filler to bridge the gap on larger joints.
2) Can I use this PVC cement on a potable water line?
Yes. The 31925 clear cement complies with NSF/ANSI 61 health effects requirements and is listed for DWV, pressure pipe, potable water and electrical conduit applications. It also meets ASTM D2564, which is the standard spec for PVC solvent cements that inspectors look for on a plumbing rough-in.
3) How cold can it be outside when I glue PVC with Oatey 31925?
Recommended application range is 40 to 110 degrees F (4 to 43 degrees C). Below 40 F the solvent flashes off too slowly and cure times stretch out, so for winter work outdoors you want an all-weather or low-temp cement rather than this one.
4) Can I use PVC cement on CPVC or ABS pipe?
No. The 31925 is formulated for PVC only. CPVC needs a CPVC-specific solvent cement, ABS needs ABS cement, and joining ABS to PVC requires a transition green cement. Using PVC cement on the wrong resin gives you a joint that looks glued and fails under pressure.
5) Will this Oatey cement pass a low-VOC jurisdiction like California SCAQMD?
It will. The 31925 is a low VOC solvent cement meeting California South Coast Air Quality Management District 1168/316A or BAAQMD Method 40 requirements, and Oatey's solvent cement and primer line is certified to UL Greenguard Gold. That matters for school, healthcare and LEED jobs where indoor air quality is specified.
6) Do I need a separate primer, or does this cement do it alone?
This is cement, not a primer. On pressure and potable water work most codes require a purple primer before the cement, and the 31925 is not a one-step product. Plan to order primer alongside it; for DWV in some jurisdictions primer may be optional, so go by your local code.
7) Why choose clear cement over the purple or blue Oatey cements?
Clear leaves no colored ring on exposed pipe, so it's the pick for finished or visible work like exposed risers and shop-built assemblies. Purple cements are pigmented so an inspector can see at a glance that cement was applied. If your inspector wants visible evidence on the joint, use a colored primer with this clear cement.
8) How hot can a line glued with this cement run?
Maximum use temperature for the 31925 joint is 60 degrees C (140 F). That covers ordinary cold and tempered water and DWV drainage. Anything running hotter, like a domestic hot water supply above that, belongs in CPVC with a CPVC cement, not PVC.
9) Is this cement fast enough for repairs where I need water back on quickly?
The 31925 uses an advanced quick-setting formulation, which is why it gets specified for service work where downtime matters. It sets fast, but full cure before pressurizing still depends on pipe size, temperature and system pressure, so give the joint its cure time before you turn the water on.
