1) What pipe sizes can Oatey 31012 clear PVC cement handle?
Oatey 31012 regular body clear cement works on all schedules and classes of PVC pipe and fittings up to 4 inch for Schedule 40, and up to 2 inch for Schedule 80 with an interference fit. Above those sizes you need a medium or heavy body cement instead, since regular body does not carry enough gap fill for larger joints.
2) Can I use this PVC cement on a potable water line?
Yes. The 31012 clear cement complies with NSF/ANSI 61 health effects requirements and is listed for DWV, pressure pipe, potable water and electrical applications. It also meets ASTM D2564, the standard spec for PVC solvent cement, which is what most plumbing codes and inspectors reference.
3) Will this cement work on CPVC or ABS pipe?
No. Oatey 31012 is a PVC-only solvent cement. CPVC needs a CPVC-specific cement, ABS needs ABS cement, and joining ABS to PVC requires a transition cement. Using PVC cement on the wrong material gives you a joint that can fail under pressure.
4) How cold can it be when I use Oatey PVC cement?
The recommended application range for the 31012 clear cement is 40F to 110F (4C to 43C). Below 40F, Oatey makes a dedicated all-weather cement for cold work. Working in that stated range is what keeps the set time and joint strength predictable on outdoor or unconditioned jobs.
5) Do I need PVC primer with this cement, or does it weld on its own?
The 31012 is a solvent cement, not an all-in-one. Most codes and inspectors require a purple primer on PVC pressure and potable lines before cementing, and primer is sold separately from the cement. The cement can does include a dauber in the lid, so you do not need a separate applicator for the cement itself.
6) Is clear cement or purple primer-and-cement better for a job that gets inspected?
Clear cement leaves no color on the pipe, which is why it is chosen for exposed or finished work. But an inspector usually wants to see purple primer on the joint as visual proof it was primed. Using the 31012 clear cement over purple primer gives you both: the required primer witness mark and a clean cement line.
7) Is Oatey 31012 low VOC for California jobs?
Yes.
