1) Can Oatey 30768 purple primer be used on both PVC and CPVC pipe?
Yes. Oatey 30768 is a dual purple primer and cleaner formulated for both PVC and CPVC pipe and fittings, and it applies to any diameter of either material. It strips surface dirt, oils and other contaminants off the pipe and fitting socket before you brush on solvent cement.
2) My inspector requires visible proof that primer was used. Does this one leave a purple mark?
It does. The purple tint is the point of the 30768 formula, it leaves a visible purple ring at the joint so an inspector can verify primer was applied where code requires that proof. If you are working somewhere that prohibits tinted primer on exposed piping, you need a clear primer instead.
3) Does Oatey 30768 meet ASTM F656 and low-VOC air quality rules?
Yes on both. 4) Do I still need solvent cement if I buy the Oatey 30768 purple primer?
Yes. The 30768 is a primer and cleaner only, it prepares and softens the pipe and fitting surfaces but it does not bond anything. You order it alongside a PVC or CPVC solvent cement rated for the pipe size and material you are joining, and apply the cement right after priming while the surface is still wet.
5) What is the difference between Oatey 30768 primer/cleaner and a straight purple primer?
A primer-only product is more aggressive, it is formulated purely to soften and etch the pipe surface. The 30768 is a combined primer and cleaner, described as less aggressive than primer-only products, so it does the degreasing job as well as the softening. Some jurisdictions specify a true primer rather than a primer/cleaner, so check your local code before you standardize on it for inspected work.
6) Can I use Oatey purple primer on ABS drain pipe?
No. The 30768 is specified for PVC and CPVC pipe and fittings. ABS drain, waste and vent piping is joined with ABS cement and is not primed with this product, so if your building has black ABS DWV you want an ABS solvent cement instead.
7) Is Oatey 30768 approved for potable water lines?
It complies with NSF/ANSI 61 health effects requirements, which is the standard covering materials in contact with drinking water, so it is used on potable CPVC and PVC water supply as well as DWV. Oatey's cement and primer products also carry UL Greenguard Gold certification for indoor emissions.
