1) Will the Oatey 42004 snap-tite strainer fit my existing shower drain?
The 42004 is a 4-1/4 inch round strainer that snaps onto no-calk, tile shower, offset, solvent weld, brass NPT and two-part shower drain bodies. Oatey lists it as compatible with their 101BR, 101PNC, 101NPT, 101PS, 102, 103, 130, 131 and 140 NC Series shower drains, and it will work on any 4-1/4 inch round drain top. Measure the existing strainer ring: if it is 4-1/4 inches across, this drops in.
2) Does the strainer work on both 2 inch and 3 inch shower drains?
Yes. The 42004 is made for use with a 2 inch or 3 inch drain opening. The sizing that matters for the snap fit is the 4-1/4 inch round drain top, not the pipe size below it.
3) Do I need to replace the whole shower drain, or can I just change the strainer?
Just the strainer. This is a replacement snap-in cover for a drain body that is already set in the floor, so there is no cutting, no solvent welding and no disturbing the pan. It snaps in by hand and pulls back out when the drain needs to be cleaned or snaked.
4) Is this polished brass strainer solid brass or plated?
The body is stainless steel with an UltraShine PVD polished brass finish. That means the corrosion resistance comes from the stainless base, and the PVD plating gives the brass look while standing up to common household cleaning chemicals. It is not a solid cast brass strainer.
5) I manage apartments with polished brass fixtures. Will this match the rest of the bathroom trim?

6) Will a snap-in strainer stay put, or does it need screws?
No screws. The 42004 holds by friction snap into the drain top, which is the point of the design: it goes in without tools and comes out again for cleaning. If your existing strainer is a screw-down type with a center or two-hole fastener, this is not a direct swap unless the drain top is a 4-1/4 inch snap style.
