Orca Hardware OED5648-AL – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does Less Bottom Rod mean on this Orca exit device, and why would I want it?
Less bottom rod means the device latches only at the head, with no bottom rod or floor strike. Nothing protrudes at the threshold, so wheelchairs, stretchers and carts roll straight through and there is no floor hardware to collect dirt or get kicked out of adjustment. An auxiliary spring latch (fire bolt) sits in the lower edge of the door and releases when exposed to fire, holding the door closed. Hospitals, schools and other high traffic openings are the usual place for LBR.
2) Can I use this on a pair of doors with no center mullion?
Yes. A surface vertical rod device latches into the head frame rather than a strike on the opposite leaf, so a pair fitted with these needs no center mullion and gives you the full clear opening. Minimum stile for double door applications is 3-1/2 inches, so check the lock stile on aluminum or narrow framed leaves before ordering.
3) Is this exit device exit only, or can I add outside trim for key entry?
As supplied it is exit only, with no outside operating trim. Orca lists the OED56 as available with outside trims, so if you need key or lever access from the corridor side you order that trim separately as part of the same order.
4) My door has a narrow aluminum stile - is the Orca OED5648 the right choice?
The Orca OED56 Series calls for a minimum 3-1/2 inch stile in double door applications, which suits wide stile and medium stile openings. For a true narrow stile aluminum door, a narrow stile device is the safer pick: the Von Duprin 3327A-3ft and 7527-3ft are Grade 1 narrow stile surface vertical rod devices for 1-3/4 inch doors, the Corbin Russwin ED4400 is a Grade 1 narrow stile device that accepts trim, and the Falcon 19-V-EO is a Grade 1 narrow stile exit only device.
5) What is the closest equivalent to the Orca OED5648 vertical rod exit device from a major manufacturer?
The Orca OED56 Series 48 inch device is a non-handed, exit only surface vertical rod device carrying ANSI A165.3 Grade 1 with hex key dogging for 1-3/4 inch doors. The closest peer in function and dogging is the Von Duprin 7827-3ft, a Grade 1 surface vertical rod exit device with hex key dogging for 1-3/4 inch doors. The Von Duprin 2227-3FT is another Grade 1 non-handed wide stile surface vertical rod device for 1-3/4 inch doors. Both are built for 36 inch door widths, while the Orca is a 48 inch rail, so the door width drives which one fits.
6) Do I need to order a left hand or right hand version of the Orca OED56?
No handing to specify. The OED56 is non-handed, so one device covers either leaf of a pair or a single door swinging either way. Mounting is by standard thru-bolts and the door takes the 161 ANSI cutout.
7) Can the Orca OED56 be held in the retracted position during business hours?
Yes, it uses hex key dogging. Insert the hex wrench to hold the push rail depressed and the latch retracted, turning the opening into a push/pull door for the day, then undog it to restore latching at night. Hex dogging is mechanical only, so no power or accessories are needed.
8) What ANSI grade is the Orca OED56 vertical rod device?
It is listed to ANSI A165.3, Grade 1, and carries UL and ULC listing. Grade 1 is the top commercial tier, which is what most institutional and school specifications call for on egress doors. The touch bar is operative over two thirds of the door's clear opening width, and latch bolt and spring are stainless steel.
9) Is there a Grade 2 alternative to the Orca OED5648 for lighter traffic?
The Orca OED56 Series is an ANSI A165.3 Grade 1 device. If the opening is specified at Grade 2, the Dexter ED2000 Series is a Grade 2 surface vertical rod panic device and the TownSteel TS5100 Series is a Grade 2 heavy duty wide stile surface vertical rod device sized 36 by 84 inches. Confirm the door schedule first, since many institutional and school openings call for Grade 1 by spec.
10) Which vertical rod devices are handed, and which match the Orca OED5648 non-handed setup?
The Orca OED56 Series 48 inch device is non-handed, so one part number covers both left and right hand openings. Among the peers, the BEST Precision 5201 Series 36 inch device is listed as reversible, the Sargent 2727 is a reversible surface vertical rod device, and the Von Duprin 2227-3FT is listed as non-handed. Any of those avoids handing off the door schedule.
11) Is the push rail on the Orca OED56 full length across the door?
It is a half length push rail on a touch bar chassis, not a full width bar. The chassis is a mounted unit design, and cap and rail are brass, stainless steel or steel with an aluminum finish. If your spec calls for a crossbar look instead, the Corbin Russwin ED7400 is a crossbar surface vertical rod device.
12) What is a standard duty alternative to heavy duty vertical rod exit devices?
The Orca OED56 Series is a standard duty surface vertical rod device for institutions, schools, universities, and commercial buildings, offered in a 48 inch length for 1-3/4 inch doors. Among the peers, the Design Hardware 2000V 33 inch is also a standard duty surface vertical rod device, while the Design Hardware 1000V 33 inch is the heavy duty counterpart and the TownSteel EF9727 is a heavy duty Grade 1 device. Match duty level to door traffic and the spec on the drawing.
