Pass & Seymour 3890 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the P&S 3890 the right outlet for an electric range or dryer circuit?
For a range, yes on the older 3-wire setup: 50A at 125/250V in the 10-50R pattern is the legacy electric range receptacle. It is not a dryer outlet, dryers use the 30A 10-30R or 14-30R pattern and a 50A device is the wrong ampacity match for that circuit. Note the 10-50R has no separate ground conductor, so on new range circuits run under current code you want the 4-wire 14-50R instead. Use the 3890 for replacement on an existing 3-wire range circuit.
2) Can I use the Pass & Seymour 3890 for an EV charger outlet?
Not the way most EVSE cords are built. Portable chargers ship with a 14-50P, which is the 4-wire pattern, and the 3890 is a 10-50R. The blade geometry is different and no adapter should be substituted on a 50A continuous load. Spec a 14-50R for EV charging.
3) What is the difference between the Pass & Seymour 3890 and the Eaton 7379 50A receptacle?
Both are 50A black receptacles, but they take different plugs. The Pass & Seymour 3890 is a straight blade 10-50R rated 125/250V, so the cord cap pushes straight in and pulls straight out. The Eaton 7379 is an industrial locking receptacle rated 600V/250V AC/DC, so the plug is inserted and twisted to lock in place. Match the receptacle to the plug already on the equipment cord: a 10-50P straight blade cap will not engage a locking device, and a locking cap will not enter the 3890.
4) Is the 3890 a single receptacle or a duplex?
Single. One 50A 10-50R outlet per device, flush mounted, in black. High-amperage straight blade devices at this rating are always single outlet, so if you need two 50A drops you are installing two devices on two circuits.
5) What is the difference between the P&S 3890 straight blade 50A outlet and a 50A locking receptacle?
Both carry 50A, but they hold the cord differently. The 3890 is straight blade, the plug pulls straight out, which is what you want on equipment that gets moved or unplugged routinely. Eaton's industrial locking receptacle at 50A, 600V/250V AC/DC, twists to lock so vibration or a cord tug will not drop the connection. Machinery, hoists and temporary power feeds usually get the locking version; a range or shop appliance gets straight blade.
6) Can I use the 3890 for a regular 120V shop outlet?
No. This is a 50A 125/250V two-hot device, it is not wired or configured for a standard 15A or 20A 120V branch circuit and no ordinary cord cap fits it. For general commercial 120V outlets look at the Leviton CR20 20A 5-20R self-grounding commercial grade duplex, or the Eaton Arrow Hart 15A 125V 5-15R industrial specification grade duplex.
7) Is there a GFCI version of the 3890, or what do I use where GFCI protection is required?
The Pass & Seymour 3890 is a straight blade 10-50R device without integral fault protection. Where the circuit needs receptacle-level GFCI, the Leviton G5362-WTE SmartlockPro is a GFCI duplex rated 20A 125V, weather-resistant and tamper-resistant, in black; for arc-fault protection the Leviton AFTR2-HG is an AFCI duplex rated 20A 125V, hospital grade and tamper-resistant. Both of those are 20A 125V devices, so they serve a general-purpose branch circuit rather than a 50A 125/250V load. A 50A 10-50R load requiring fault protection is protected at the breaker, not at the outlet.
8) What should I specify for a patient care area instead of the 3890?
The Pass & Seymour 3890 is a UL Listed 50A 10-50R straight blade receptacle for high-power equipment and is not a hospital grade device. For 125V convenience outlets in patient care spaces, the Leviton 16262-IGG Decora Plus is hospital grade with an isolated ground, rated 15A/125V in gray, and the Leviton AFTR2-HG is a heavy-duty hospital grade AFCI duplex rated 20A 125V and tamper-resistant. Those cover the general-purpose outlets; a 50A 125/250V cooking or equipment circuit in the same facility still lands on a 10-50R device like the 3890.
9) Can a 20A commercial receptacle like the Leviton CR20-GY be used in place of a 50A range outlet?
No. The Leviton CR20-GY is a 20A NEMA 5-20R self-grounding duplex receptacle, a general-purpose 125V device. The Pass & Seymour 3890 is a 50A 125/250V 10-50R single receptacle for high-power equipment on a dedicated circuit. The 5-20R slots will not accept a 10-50P cord cap, and a 20A device cannot be fed from a 50A circuit. If the equipment cord ends in a 10-50P, the 3890 is the device that matches it.
10) I need a heavy-duty outlet for a shop machine but the cord is a standard 15A plug. What matches that instead of the 3890?
The Pass & Seymour 3890 only fits a 10-50P cord cap on a 50A 125/250V circuit. For a machine ending in an ordinary 15A 125V plug, the Eaton Arrow Hart 5262W is an industrial specification grade heavy-duty duplex, 15A 125V NEMA 5-15R in gray, and the Eaton 816W-BOX is a commercial specification grade 15A single receptacle. Both take a standard straight blade 15A cap on a 125V branch circuit. Check the cord cap before ordering, because the 10-50R and 5-15R faces are not interchangeable.
11) Will an Eaton 6450W single receptacle work for the same equipment as the 3890?
No, they serve different loads. The Eaton 6450W is an industrial specification grade decorator single receptacle accepting #14-10 AWG conductors, which is a general-purpose branch circuit device. The Pass & Seymour 3890 is a 50A 125/250V 10-50R single receptacle, and a 50A feeder uses conductors larger than the 6450W terminals accept. Size the device to the circuit: 10-50P equipment on a 50A run takes the 3890.
