  • Dummy rim cylinder available

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the trade-off of a standard cylinder versus an interchangeable core?
A standard PDQ cylinder rekeys the traditional way, by repinning or pulling the lock, generally with a locksmith, so it is less convenient where keys change often. For doors with frequent turnover, PDQ suggests interchangeable cores and keeping standard cylinders on doors that stay keyed long-term.

PDQ I01707 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the PDQ I0170 rim cylinder be keyed to match my existing Schlage C keys?
Yes. The I0170 conventional rim cylinder is offered in Schlage C (SCC), and SCC is the default keyway if nothing else is specified. Schlage C-K (SCC-K) and Schlage E (SCE) are also available. Keying is specified separately: keyed different (KD), keyed alike in groups of 3-4 (KA4), or 0-bitted (OB) if your locksmith will pin it to an existing system.
2) What keyways does the PDQ I0170 rim cylinder come in besides Schlage?
Seventeen choices in all: PDQ TA (restricted), Arrow AR1, Corbin 59A1, Corbin 60, Corbin L4, Falcon E-R, Kwikset, Russwin 981, Russwin D1, Sargent LA, Sargent RA-RC, Schlage C, Schlage C-K, Schlage E, Accentra (Yale) E1R, Accentra (Yale) GA, and a dummy with no keyway at all. That spread is what lets you keep a mixed-brand building on one key system.
3) Should I buy a conventional rim cylinder or an interchangeable core for a building with high tenant turnover?
Conventional cylinders like the I0170 are non-interchangeable pin tumbler cylinders, so rekeying means repinning or pulling the lock, usually a locksmith visit. On doors that change hands often that gets expensive fast. PDQ's own guidance is to use interchangeable cores where keys change frequently and keep conventional cylinders on doors that stay keyed long-term, like mechanical rooms, electrical closets and permanent staff openings.
4) What do I have to specify when ordering a PDQ I0170 cylinder?
Three things, and two of them are mandatory. Finish (one of seven), keyway (one of seventeen, including the dummy) and keying (KD keyed different, KA4 keyed alike in 3-4, or OB 0-bitted). Keyway and keying are both required selections, so an order that only states the finish and the I0170 number is incomplete.
5) Is the PDQ I0170 a rim cylinder or a mortise cylinder?
It is a rim cylinder. Rim cylinders mount from the inside face of the door with a backplate and two screws and drive a flat tailpiece, which is what rim exit devices and rim night latches take. If your hardware threads a cylinder into the lock body itself, you need a mortise cylinder instead, not the I0170.
6) What is the PDQ dummy rim cylinder for?
The 60D dummy version of the I0170 has no keyway and no keying. It fills the cylinder hole on an exit device or rim-prepped door where you want the outside to look finished but do not want key access from that side. It is specified in place of a keyway, not in addition to one.
7) What finishes does the PDQ I0170 rim cylinder come in, and does the part number change?
Seven: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze, 622 flat black, 625 bright chrome and 626 satin chrome. Each gets its own PDQ number off the I0170 base, for example I01705 for 605 bright brass, I01707 for 626 satin chrome and I0170H for 622 flat black. If you are matching exit device trim already on the building, 626 and 613E are the usual pairings on commercial openings.
8) Why would I order the PDQ TA restricted keyway instead of a standard one?
TA is PDQ's restricted keyway. Keys in a restricted keyway are not available as blanks over the counter the way Schlage C or Kwikset blanks are, so tenants and staff cannot walk into a hardware store and duplicate them. Facilities that need key control, schools, healthcare and multi-family, usually go this route; general-use doors stay on a standard keyway.
9) Can I order PDQ I0170 cylinders keyed alike across several doors?
Yes. KA4 is keyed alike in groups of 3 to 4 cylinders, which covers a set of openings that should share one key. For larger uniform sets or a master keyed system, specify OB (0-bitted) and have your locksmith pin them into your existing system. KD gives every cylinder its own random key.
10) Is the PDQ I0170 cylinder meant for commercial doors or residential?
It is a commercial cylinder, catalogued for commercial door hardware, and the keyway list reflects that: Sargent, Corbin, Russwin, Falcon and Accentra (Yale) sections are commercial sections. Kwikset is offered too, which covers residential-keyed openings inside a commercial property such as apartment unit doors on an existing Kwikset system.
