Pemko 2749D 36 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will a 9 inch wide threshold work under a door that swings over it, or do I need a narrower saddle?
The Pemko 2749 is a full saddle 9 inches wide by 1/4 inch high, so it spans well past the door face on both sides. That width is meant for openings where you want the saddle to cover a wide floor joint or an out-swing sill condition, not a tight jamb-to-jamb strip. Check that your door bottom clearance and any weatherstrip or door bottom sweep can ride over a 1/4 inch rise before you commit, and that you have 9 inches of clear floor at the opening without hitting an adjacent frame, transition strip, or floor closer cover.
2) Can I use this threshold on a fire rated door assembly?
Yes. The 2749 threshold carries UL 10C positive pressure and UL 4L10 listings, so it can go under a rated door assembly without voiding the rating on the threshold side. That is the specific reason to pick this saddle over an unrated aluminum transition strip on a stair, corridor, or tenant separation door.
3) What lengths does the Pemko 2749 threshold come in, and can I get it cut for a pair of doors?
Stock lengths are 36, 42, and 72 inches, in mill finish aluminum or dark bronze anodized aluminum. Beyond stock, the 2749 is produced from 24 inches minimum up to 185 inches maximum and cut to size, so a pair of doors or a wide storefront opening is covered by the 72 inch or a custom cut. Measure jamb to jamb at the floor, not the door width, since a full saddle runs the full frame opening.
4) What fasteners come with the 2749 threshold and will they hold in a concrete slab?
The standard fastening is a wood screw, SMS #10 x 1 inch. That works into a wood subfloor or a wood sill. On a concrete slab you will want to drill and set anchors rather than drive the standard screws directly; other fastener options are made for the 2749 for different substrates. Order the anchor type to match what is actually under the opening, since the same threshold ships with the wood screw pack by default.
5) Saddle threshold or a bumper seal threshold for an exterior door?
A full saddle like the 2749 is a flat floor transition, 9 inches wide and 1/4 inch high, with no raised stop or seal built into it. It bridges a floor joint and gives you a clean accessible crossing, and it pairs with a separate door bottom or sweep to handle weather. If you need the threshold itself to make the seal, you want a profile with an integral vinyl or bumper insert instead. Choose the 2749 when accessibility and fire rating drive the opening and the sealing is being done by the door bottom.
6) Will mill finish and dark bronze match the other thresholds in my building?
Two finishes are made on the 2749: mill finish aluminum, which is the plain silver extrusion most commercial openings use, and dark bronze anodized aluminum for dark frame and storefront packages. Both are the same 9 inch by 1/4 inch extruded aluminum profile, so a fleet of openings can be standardized on one and matched later without changing the fit or the cut length.
7) Is aluminum tough enough for a high traffic entrance or a loading dock door?
The 2749 is extruded aluminum, which is the standard commercial threshold material and holds up to foot traffic and weather without rusting. Where it gets punished is rolling loads, carts, pallet jacks, and dollies crossing all day. In those spots the 1/4 inch height helps because there is almost no edge to catch, but fastener spacing matters more than the metal does: anchor it tight to the floor across the full 9 inch width so nothing works loose under the wheels.
