1) What is an overlapping astragal and do I need one on my double doors?
An overlapping astragal mounts to the face of one leaf and laps over the gap at the meeting stile, so the pair seals against smoke, light and air where the two doors come together. You need one on a pair of fire doors that don't have a mullion. If your pair is non-rated and you mainly want a weather seal, a T-astragal that sets into the gap, like the Cal-Royal EAST-501 with a vinyl insert, is the other approach. If you only want to shield the lock area rather than the full height, that's a lock astragal such as the Trimco 5001 or 5002, and it is a different part entirely.
2) Is a Trimco 5001 or 5002 lock astragal a substitute for the Pemko 357SPXTB?
No. The Trimco 5001 and 5002 are lock astragals in stainless steel, used with mortise or cylindrical locks in the 5001 case and with cylindrical locks in the 5002 case at 1-9/16 inch by 6 inch. Those are short pieces that cover the lock area of a meeting stile. The Pemko 357SPXTB is a full-height 84 inch overlapping astragal running the length of the door edge, 2 inches wide with a 1/8 inch height profile. They solve different problems and are not interchangeable.
3) How does the Pemko 357SP astragal attach to the door?
Thru-bolt mounting. Bolts pass all the way through the door leaf rather than relying on sheet metal screws into the door face, which is what holds the astragal in place under the pressures of a fire test. Plan for the door to be drilled through at the mounting hole pattern, and coordinate that with any existing lock or exit device prep on the same stile.
4) What else could I use instead of the Pemko 357 on an 84 inch pair of doors?

5) Will a 1/8 inch thick astragal clear my door closer and coordinator on a pair?
The 357 profile stands only 1/8 inch off the door face across a 2 inch width, so it adds very little projection at the meeting stile. On a pair with an overlapping astragal you still need a coordinator so the leaf carrying the astragal closes last, otherwise the doors will not latch in sequence, which is part of keeping the opening within NFPA 80.
