1) Will the Philips MH250/U metal halide lamp work on my existing 250W metal halide ballast?
It needs a ballast built for ANSI code M58, which is the ballast designation this lamp carries. Check the label on your ballast or fixture for M58 (or M58/E). The lamp runs at 133V nominal across a 118V to 148V operating range with 2.1A lamp current, and the ballast must supply at least 350V to strike it. A pulse-start or non-M58 ballast will not run it correctly.
2) Can I burn this 250W metal halide lamp horizontally in a wall pack or floodlight?
Yes, the MH250/U is a universal burn position lamp, so horizontal, base up, or base down all work. Two tradeoffs come with off-vertical mounting: rated life drops to 75 percent of the vertical figure outside plus or minus 15 degrees of vertical, and horizontal lumens run 6 to 10 percent below the published vertical numbers. If you are doing photometric layouts for a parking lot, derate accordingly.
3) Why do my metal halide high bays take so long to come back on after a power blip?
That is normal for this lamp type. The MH250/U needs up to 120 seconds to reach full output on a cold start, and after a power interruption the arc tube must cool before it will restrike, a minimum of 8 minutes. If your space cannot tolerate that dark period, the fixture needs an instant-restrike option or emergency egress lighting on a separate circuit. It is not a sign of a failing lamp or ballast.
4) Will the 4000K color of this Philips lamp match the other metal halide lamps in my warehouse?
