Sta-Kon RB5 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What bolt size does the Sta-Kon RB5 ring terminal fit?
The RB5 is sized for an M5 bolt or stud, so the ring tongue slips over a 5 mm threaded post or screw terminal. If your breaker lug, busbar stud or terminal block screw is larger than M5, the ring will not pass over it and you need the next ring size up.
2) What wire gauge does the blue insulated Sta-Kon ring terminal take?
Blue is the standard color code on insulated terminals for the 16 to 14 AWG range, and the RB5 barrel is blue. Use a yellow-coded ring for 12 to 10 AWG and a red one for 22 to 18 AWG.
3) Is the insulation on the Sta-Kon RB5 nylon or vinyl?
Neither. The insulating sleeve is polycarbonate, which is a harder, more impact- and heat-tolerant plastic than the soft PVC used on common vinyl terminals. For panel work where terminals get bumped or run warm, that matters more than the color.
4) Do I need a special crimp tool for a polycarbonate insulated ring terminal?
Use an insulated-terminal crimper matched to the blue 16-14 AWG color code, the same dies you would use on a nylon or vinyl ring. A bare-terminal or uninsulated crimp die will cut or split the polycarbonate sleeve instead of compressing the barrel underneath it.
5) Should I use a ring terminal or a fork terminal on a panel screw?
A ring like the RB5 has a closed tongue, so the screw has to come all the way out to install or remove it, but it cannot vibrate or pull off under a loosening screw. A fork or spade slides in sideways for faster service work on terminal blocks. For motor leads, busbar studs and anything subject to vibration, the closed ring is the right call.
6) What is the Sta-Kon RB5 part number and where is it made?
Order it as Sta-Kon RB5, a polycarbonate insulated ring terminal for M5 bolts, manufactured in Sweden.
