Sta-Kon RA5F – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire sizes does the Sta-Kon RA5F fork terminal accept?
The RA5F takes 0.5 to 1.5 mm2 conductor, which covers roughly 22 through 16 AWG stranded wire. If your conductor is heavier than 1.5 mm2 it will not crimp properly in this barrel and you need the next size up in the series.
2) Will the RA5F fork terminal fit an M5 stud or screw?
Yes. The RA5F is sized for an M5 stud, so it slides onto an M5 terminal screw without fully removing the screw. That open fork is the reason to pick it over a ring terminal on a crowded terminal block.
3) Should I use a fork terminal or a ring terminal on a terminal block?
A fork (spade) terminal like the RA5F drops onto the stud from the side, so you only back the screw off a turn or two to add or swap a wire. A ring terminal has to come off over the top of the screw, which means removing it completely, but it cannot vibrate off under a loose screw. For panel and control wiring where you service connections often, the fork wins; for vibration-prone equipment, go ring.
4) Is the red insulation on this Sta-Kon terminal a size code?
It is. The RA5F is red, and on insulated terminals red is the standard color for the smallest wire range, here 0.5 to 1.5 mm2 (about 22 to 16 AWG). Blue is the next range up and yellow above that, so electricians can size-check a crimp across a panel by color alone.
5) Do I need a special crimp tool for the insulated RA5F fork terminal?
Use a controlled-cycle crimper with the insulated-terminal die set matched to the red 0.5-1.5 mm2 range. Insulated terminals crimp over the sleeve, so an uninsulated or generic plier-style die will split the polycarbonate or under-compress the copper barrel. No tool is supplied with the terminals.
6) What is the RA5F terminal barrel made of, and does it need a plated conductor?
The conductor barrel and tongue are electrolytic copper, the standard material for crimped power and control terminations because of its conductivity and how predictably it cold-flows under a crimp. It terminates copper conductors; do not use a copper terminal on aluminum conductor.
7) Is the insulation on the RA5F fork terminal nylon or vinyl?
Neither. The RA5F uses a polycarbonate insulating sleeve, which is stiffer and more heat and impact tolerant than soft PVC vinyl sleeves. That matters if the terminals sit in a warm enclosure or get handled hard during pull-in.
8) Where is the Sta-Kon RA5F terminal manufactured?
The RA5F is made in Sweden. Specifiers on government or institutional jobs with country-of-origin reporting requirements can record it as SE.
