BEST 2101 628 36 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the BEST Precision 2101 rim exit device fit a 2-inch thick metal door?
Yes. The Precision 2101 rim device covers doors from 1-3/4 inch through 2-1/4 inch thick, so a 2 inch leaf is inside the range. It is built and shipped standard for a 1-3/4 inch thick, 3'-0 inch wide door, and the 36 inch device covers openings up to 4'-0 inch wide. One caution: it is not rated for wood doors, so plan on hollow metal or aluminum.
2) Do I have to order the BEST Precision 2101 handed?
No handing to specify. The 2101 is nonhanded and reversible for all functions and trims. It ships packaged RHRB, and you reverse it in the field if the door swings the other way.
3) Will the BEST Precision 2101 latch into my existing rim strike?
The 2101 uses a stainless steel deadlocking latchbolt with a 3/4 inch throw, which is the normal projection for a surface mounted rim strike on a single door or the active leaf of a pair with a mullion. If your current opening runs a standard rim strike at that throw, it will engage. Being a rim device, it latches into the frame stop or mullion, not the head and sill, so it will not secure a pair of doors on its own.
4) Is the Precision 2101 a wide stile or narrow stile device, and what if my aluminum doors have narrow stiles?
Wide stile. The 2101 is built for the wider rails you get on hollow metal and heavy commercial doors. On narrow stile aluminum storefront you want a narrow stile rim device instead, for example the Adams Rite 8800 Series (also rated 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch thick), the Corbin Russwin ED4200, or the TownSteel ED3700.
5) Can I hold the doors in the unlatched position during business hours with the Precision 2101?
Yes, if you order it with dogging. The 2101 is offered with hex key dogging, cylinder dogging, or less dogging. Hex dogging is the usual choice for staff held-open during the day; cylinder dogging keys it so only a keyholder can dog the bar; less dogging is what you specify when the facility does not want the touchbar dogged at all.
6) Is outside trim included with the BEST Precision 2101, or do I order it separately?
Pick it at the order. The 2101 can be configured device only for exit only openings, or with 1701 pull trim and cover plate, or with 4901 lever trim and cover plate. If you need people to get back in from the outside, the pull or lever trim has to be specified; device only gives you egress only.
7) Can the BEST Precision 2101 secure a pair of doors?
Not by itself. A rim device latches into the frame or into a removable mullion, so on a pair you either add a mullion and run a rim device on each leaf, or switch to vertical rod hardware that latches at the head and sill. For the concealed vertical rod route, Hager's 4501 Series is a 36 inch Grade 1 wide stile pushpad CVR, and the 4601 is the narrow stile version.
8) I need a rim exit device on a labeled fire door - can I use the Precision 2101?
The Precision 2101 carries a Fire Rating value of No, so for a labeled fire door opening choose a device listed as fire rated. Fire rated rim devices in the same size class include the Marks USA M9900F at 36" (exit only, panic protector end cap) and its 48" counterpart, the Orca OED85 Series 36" fire rated rim device, the Dexter ED1000 Series fire rated rim device (Grade 1), the Arrow FS1250 at 32", and the Adams Rite 3700 Series 30" fire rated narrow stile rim device (Grade 1). The Sargent 12-8810 wide stile rim device is also fire rated and Grade 1.
9) I want electric latch retraction on a 36" rim device - how does the Precision 2101 compare to a factory electrified device?
The Precision 2101 can be ordered with device options including ELR electric latch retraction, MLR motorized latch retraction, latchbolt and touchbar monitoring switches, delayed egress, and a wireless access management option. Factory electrified 36" alternatives include the SDC S6136 Spectra S6000 electrified architectural rim exit device, a 4" wide stile device listed for 1-3/4" to 2" doors, and the Dormakaba E2103 electrified 36" rim device supplied with 4908A trim in an 08 classroom function. Where the 2101 differs is its 1-3/4" to 2-1/4" door thickness range and its center driven cam trim interface, which accepts many manufacturers' access control exterior trim.
10) What is a direct equivalent to the BEST Precision 2101 36" wide stile rim exit device from another Grade 1 line?
The Precision 2101 is a 36" wide stile rim exit device rated ANSI 156.3 Grade 1. Close wide stile Grade 1 rim peers at the same 36" size include the Corbin Russwin ED2200 (36", Grade 1, wide stile, exit only), the Corbin Russwin ED5200 (36", Grade 1, wide stile, exit only or accepts trim), the TownSteel ED1100 (36", Grade 1, wide stile, heavy duty) and the TownSteel ED9700 (36", Grade 1, wide stile, heavy duty). The Detex Advantex 10 Series at 36" is also Grade 1 wide stile and is rated extra heavy duty. Where the 2101 differs is its published door thickness range of 1-3/4" to 2-1/4" and its center driven cam trim interface, while the ED5200 and ED3200 are listed at 1-3/4" door thickness.
11) The 2101 won't fit my aluminum storefront stile - what rim device should I use instead?
The Precision 2101 is a wide stile device, so it needs the stile width a wide stile pushbar requires. For narrow stile aluminum openings, use a narrow stile rim device instead: the Adams Rite 8800 Series 30" narrow stile rim device is listed for 1-3/4" to 2-1/4" doors and Grade 1, matching the 2101's thickness range; the Adams Rite 8700 Series 30" and EX88 are also narrow stile Grade 1 with starwheel interlocking. Other narrow stile Grade 1 options include the Corbin Russwin ED4200 36", the Falcon 19-R 36", and the TownSteel ED3700 and ED8900 at 36".
12) My opening is wider than 4 feet - what takes the place of the 36" Precision 2101?
The Precision 2101 at 36" is built for openings up to 4'-0" wide, with 3'-0" the standard door width. For a wider leaf, step up to a 48" device: the Corbin Russwin ED3200 is a 48" Grade 1 wide stile crossbar rim device, the DORMA 9300 Series 48" wide stile rim device is Grade 1 heavy duty and lists 1-3/4" to 2-1/4" door thickness like the 2101, the Dexter ED1000 is offered in a 4FT Grade 1 version, and the Cal-Royal A9820 is a 48" exit only rim device. The Sargent 2828 and 3828 are Grade 1 reversible wide stile rim devices for 48" minimum door width.
13) Can I put the Precision 2101 on a wood door?
The Precision 2101 is listed as not wood door compatible. If the opening is a wood door, the Adams Rite 8700 Series 30" narrow stile rim device and the Adams Rite 3700 Series 30" fire rated narrow stile rim device are both listed wood door compatible and Grade 1. Most of the other wide stile rim devices in the same class, including the Corbin Russwin ED5200, the TownSteel ED1100 and the DORMA 8300, carry the same not-wood-compatible listing as the 2101.
14) Will an SDC PSB560 or MSB550 switch bar work as a substitute for the Precision 2101?
No. The Precision 2101 is a mechanical rim exit device with a stainless steel deadlocking latchbolt with 3/4" throw, so it latches the door itself. The SDC PSB560 SureExit 36" pressure sense bar and the SDC MSB550 36" mechanical switch bar are exit bars that release a separate electromagnetic lock rather than carrying their own rim latch, and they are listed for narrow or wide stile doors. The Securitron EMB electromechanical exit bar is the same idea and is listed for 2-1/4" doors. If the opening needs a latching rim device, the 2101 or another rim device is the right part; the switch bars suit maglock openings.
15) What function does the BEST Precision 2101 come as, and can I change it later?
Functions on the 2101 are field selectable, so you are not locked into one at the order. If you do not call one out, it comes set to the standard 03 function. The one exception is the double cylinder option, which is not field selectable and has to be ordered that way.
16) Is the Precision 2101 heavy enough for a school or hospital exit that gets constant traffic?
It is a Grade 1 device. The 2101 is BHMA certified to ANSI 156.3 Grade 1, and the cover, touchbar, device channel, lock and hinge side filler, and end cap are heavy wrought brass, bronze, or stainless steel. It carries a UL Listing for panic and fire exit hardware to UL10C and UBC 7-2. That is the level normally specified for schools, healthcare, and government exits.
17) My opening is 4 feet wide. Do I need the 48 inch device or will the 36 inch Precision 2101 cover it?
The 36 inch 2101 is rated for openings up to 4'-0 inch wide, so a 4 foot leaf is covered. Standard configuration is for a 3'-0 inch wide door, so on the wider leaf verify the bar position against the template before you drill.
18) Is there a lighter-duty or Grade 2 alternative to the Precision 2101 for a low traffic back door?
The Precision 2101 is a BHMA certified ANSI 156.3 Grade 1 device. If a lower certification level is acceptable for the opening, the Cal-Royal 5000 36" wide rim exit device uses a touch bar and a Grade 2 chassis, and the Cal-Royal 5500 48" push bar device is also Grade 2; both are listed heavy duty. The Design Hardware 2000R at 33" is a standard duty wide stile rim device with hex key dogging, versus the Design Hardware 1000R at 33" which is the heavy duty version of the same body. Note the size difference: the 2101 is a 36" device.
19) Is a concealed vertical rod device an alternative to the Precision 2101 rim device?
They solve different openings. The Precision 2101 is a rim device, meaning the latchbolt engages a surface strike on the frame. The Hager 4501 Series 36" is a Grade 1 concealed vertical rod device with a wide stile pushpad and the Hager 4601 Series 36" is the narrow stile concealed vertical rod version; vertical rod devices latch top and bottom rather than at the strike jamb and are typically specified for pairs without a mullion. If the opening has a rim strike or a removable mullion, the 2101 or a rim peer such as the Hager 4701 Series 36" rim device is the matching type.
20) I need a crossbar or push bar look instead of the Precision 2101 touchbar - what are my options?
The Precision 2101 uses a touchbar, with the cover, touchbar, device channel and end cap in heavy wrought brass, bronze or stainless steel. For a crossbar or push bar style, the Corbin Russwin ED3200 is a 48" Grade 1 wide stile crossbar rim device, the CRL Jackson 1095 Series is a 48" crossbar rim panic device in wide stile exit only, and the Cal-Royal 5500 is a 48" push bar rim device. The CRL Jackson 1095P uses a paddle instead, and the CRL Jackson 1295 Series is a non-handed push pad wide stile rim device listed for 1-3/4" doors.
21) I need a night latch function rim device - does the Precision 2101 cover that or should I look elsewhere?
The Precision 2101 has field selectable functions except for the double cylinder option, with the "03" function supplied when nothing is specified, and it can be ordered with 1701 pull trim or 4901 lever trim as well as device only. If you prefer a device supplied in a fixed night latch configuration, the Sargent 8504 is a Grade 1 narrow stile rim device in night latch function, and the Detex V4003A/03AN is a Grade 1 wide stile rim device offered with night latch trim.
22) Which rim devices offer dogging comparable to the Precision 2101?
The Precision 2101 is ordered with cylinder dogging, hex dogging, or less dogging. Among comparable rim devices, the Design Hardware 1000R 33" heavy duty and 2000R 33" standard duty are both supplied with hex key dogging, and the Stanley Security QED200 Series narrow stile Grade 1 heavy duty rim device also uses hex-key dogging. Keep in mind the 2101 is a 36" wide stile device, while the Design Hardware devices are 33" and the QED200 is narrow stile.
23) What looks like a Precision 2101 but is not a working exit device?
The Detex Advantex 00 Series is a dummy exit device with wide stile design, Grade 1 - it gives the appearance and pushbar feel of a working device on the inactive leaf but does not latch. The Sargent 12-8810 wide stile rim device is also listed in a dummy function. The Precision 2101 by contrast is a functioning panic device with a deadlocking stainless steel latchbolt at 3/4" throw, UL Listed for panic and fire exit hardware to UL10C and UBC 7-2. Also not a substitute: the Dexter ED1500-EXTRD-SP is a 12" extension rod assembly for ED1500 devices, a component rather than a device.
24) Is the Arrow 4800 or ED910 36" device an equivalent swap for the Precision 2101?
Both are 36" rim exit devices but they differ in fit. The Arrow 4800 Series 36" rim device is narrow stile and listed for 1-3/4" doors, and the Arrow ED910 36" rim device is also listed for 1-3/4" doors. The Precision 2101 is a wide stile device covering 1-3/4" to 2-1/4" door thickness. If the door prep is wide stile and thicker than 1-3/4", confirm the range before swapping. The Arrow 3880 Series is a wide stile pushpad Grade 1 rim exit bar but is a 30" device rather than 36".
25) What finishes can I get the Precision 2100 Series rim device in to match the rest of my building?
Ten: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil-rubbed satin bronze, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626W satin chrome weatherized, 628 satin aluminum, 630 satin stainless, and 690 statuary dark bronze. For exterior openings taking weather, 626W is the weatherized chrome, and there are weatherized touchbar switch options to pair with it.
