Pro-Lok ELP-220-S – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Pro-Lok ELP-220 latch protector work on an in-swinging door?
No. The ELP-220 is built for out-swinging doors only, where the latch and strike edge are exposed on the outside and can be pried. On an in-swing door the latch is already protected by the frame stop, so a latch guard has nothing to cover. If your door swings out, the 11 x 3 inch steel plate covers the latch or deadbolt area and blocks a pry tool from reaching it.
2) Do I need to order a left hand or right hand version of the ELP-220 latch guard?
Neither. The ELP-220 plate is reversible, so the same part covers a left-handed or a right-handed out-opening door. Flip it to suit the opening. That is worth knowing if you are buying for a building with doors swinging both ways, since you stock one part number instead of two.
3) Will a latch protector fit over my lockset rose, or does the trim get in the way?
The ELP-220 is notched at the center to clear a rose of 3-1/2 inches or smaller. If the escutcheon or rose on your lever or knob measures larger than 3-1/2 inches across, the plate will not seat flat against the door and you need a guard with a wider cutout or a different configuration. Measure the trim on the outside face before ordering.
4) What screws come with the ELP-220 latch protector, or do I have to buy fasteners separately?
Mounting hardware ships with the ELP-220, so there is nothing else to add to the order to hang the plate. Install instructions are published by Pro-Lok for the ELP series.
5) I need latch guards for a whole building. Can I buy the ELP-220 in bulk instead of individually packaged?
Yes. Pro-Lok packages the ELP-220 either retail carded or in a bulk poly bag, with the bulk version denoted by a BULK suffix on the part number. For a property manager or MRO buyer doing 30 doors, the bulk pack is the one to ask for; the plate itself is the same. Note the antique brass finish is a bulk-only option.
6) I have an exit device on the door, not a lockset. Is a latch protector the right part?
A center-notched latch guard like the ELP-220 is cut for a knob or lever rose up to 3-1/2 inches, not for exit device trim. For a door with a rim panic device the part to look at is a panic guard, such as the Trimco PG8000 Series panic and latch guards, which covers both configurations in one family. Getting that distinction right before you order saves a return, because a latch guard will not clear a pull or an exit trim plate.
7) Is the Don-Jo NELP-207 an equivalent to the Pro-Lok ELP-220?
They do the same job but cover different amounts of door. The Don-Jo NELP-207 is a 12 gauge steel latch protector measuring 3-1/2 inches by 6.5 inches for aluminum entrance doors, out swing. The Pro-Lok ELP-220 is 11 inches by 3 inches and is notched at the center so a 3-1/2 inch or smaller rose passes through, letting one plate span above and below the lockset trim. If the goal is to shield a single latch on a narrow entrance door, the NELP-207 footprint applies; if the goal is to obstruct a deadbolt and a lockset on the same stile with one plate, the 11 inch length of the ELP-220 is what does it. Both are reversible-door concerns, so confirm handing: the ELP-220 is reversible for left or right-handed out-opening doors.
8) Can a latch protector for aluminum entrance doors be substituted on a hollow metal door with a deadbolt?
Not directly, and it is the most common mis-order in this family. The Don-Jo GLP-307 and LP-307 are both 2-5/8 inch by 7 inch protectors built for aluminum entrance and storefront doors, and the NELP-207 is 3-1/2 inch by 6.5 inch for aluminum entrance doors. None of those carry a rose notch. The Pro-Lok ELP-220 is 11 inches by 3 inches with a center notch sized for a 3-1/2 inch or smaller rose, and it is stated as compatible with deadbolts and lock sets for residential, commercial and industrial use. If there is a rose or escutcheon on the door, a plain rectangular storefront guard will foul it.
9) I am standardizing latch protection across a portfolio of out-swinging doors. Which product covers which door type?
Split it by door construction and trim. Out-swinging wood or hollow metal doors with a lockset rose or a deadbolt take the Pro-Lok ELP-220, an 11 inch by 3 inch steel plate notched for a 3-1/2 inch or smaller rose and reversible for left or right-handed out-opening doors, available in Aluminum and Stainless Steel. Out-swinging aluminum entrance and storefront doors take the Don-Jo LP-307 or GLP-307 at 2-5/8 inches by 7 inches, or the Don-Jo NELP-207 at 3-1/2 inches by 6.5 inches. Out-swinging doors with exit devices take the Trimco PG8000 Series panic and latch guards. Doing a door schedule this way means one line item per door type rather than a plate that has to be returned after the first install attempt.
10) What finishes does the Pro-Lok ELP-220 come in?
Aluminum and stainless steel are the two orderable finishes on the ELP-220. Both are steel plate; the difference is the surface, and on a storefront or service door most buyers match whatever the existing pulls and closer hardware already are. Pro-Lok also catalogs the ELP-220 in antique brass (bulk pack), mirrored brass, mirrored chrome and duronodic.
11) Is the ELP-220 rated for commercial use or is it a residential latch guard?
Commercial. Pro-Lok lists the ELP-220 for residential, commercial and industrial use, and it is classified as a commercial product. The plate is steel, which is what matters on a door that takes traffic and attracts pry attempts.
12) What is the difference between the Don-Jo GLP-307 and the LP-307 if I am cross-shopping against the Pro-Lok ELP-220?
Both Don-Jo parts are 2-5/8 inch by 7 inch latch protectors for out-swinging aluminum entrance doors; the LP-307 is called out as 12-gauge steel for storefront entrance doors. Either one is a narrow-stile answer. Neither overlaps the Pro-Lok ELP-220, which is an 11 inch by 3 inch plate with a center notch for a 3-1/2 inch or smaller rose. Decide on the door first: aluminum storefront stile goes to the 307 pair, and a rose or escutcheon trim on a wider door goes to the ELP-220.
