1) Will a Pro-Lok ESP-143 security strike plate fit a standard residential door jamb?
The Pro-Lok security strike plate measures 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inches, which is the common full-lip strike footprint used on wood and metal jambs. It mounts to most wood or metal door jambs, so on a typical residential opening it drops into the existing strike mortise area without new prep in most cases.
2) Do I need to buy longer screws to anchor a security strike plate into the stud?
No extra hardware needed. The Pro-Lok security strike plate ships with four screws, including 3 inch screws that reach past the jamb into the framing stud, plus 1-1/4 inch screws. Long screws into the stud are what make a strike resist a kick-in; short jamb-only screws are the usual failure point.
3) Is a 4-7/8 inch security strike plate stronger than the small standard strike that came with my lock?
It is a longer, heavier plate. At 4-7/8 inches the plate spans well above and below the latch pocket and spreads force across more of the jamb, and the included 3 inch screws tie it into the framing rather than just the jamb board. The strike that ships in a lockset box is typically a short plate with short screws. On an entry door with a separate knob or lever and a deadbolt above it, you would need one plate per bolt to reinforce the full opening.
6) Can a property manager install security strike plates without a locksmith?
Yes. Installation is a screwdriver job: remove the existing strike, seat the new plate in the same location, and drive the four supplied screws, using the 3 inch ones to catch the stud behind the jamb. On older jambs the 4-7/8 inch plate is longer than a short factory strike, so expect to pare the mortise top and bottom with a chisel to seat it flush.
