Carlon VC9932 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is Thomas & Betts VC9932 purple primer used for?
VC9932 is a purple PVC primer that preps PVC conduit and fitting surfaces before PVC cement is applied, so the solvent weld bonds properly. Thomas & Betts catalogs it as an electrical sealing compound, and it is used on conduit sealing and PVC joint prep in commercial, industrial, and residential electrical work.
2) Is the Thomas & Betts VC9932 primer a cement, or do I still need PVC glue?
It is primer only, not an adhesive. Primer softens and cleans the PVC surface; the cement makes the bond. Order a PVC cement alongside the VC9932 quart, or the joint will not hold.
3) Why is the primer purple instead of clear?
The purple dye is an inspection aid. Once it is brushed on, the colored ring on the pipe and socket is visible proof the joint was primed before cementing, which is what an inspector or a QC walk looks for. Clear primer does the same chemical job but leaves nothing to verify. Thomas & Betts supplies the VC9932 in purple for that reason.
4) Can I use this purple primer on PVC water pipe, or is it only for electrical conduit?
Thomas & Betts lists the VC9932 for electrical work, including conduit sealing and PVC pipe joint preparation on commercial, industrial, and residential electrical installations. For potable water plumbing, buy a primer specifically labeled for that service rather than assuming this one covers it.
5) What part number do I order for the quart of Thomas & Betts purple primer?
The manufacturer part number is VC9932, the quart of purple PVC primer from Thomas & Betts. That is the number to quote on a purchase order or a submittal.
6) How much primer is in the VC9932 can and how is it sold?
VC9932 comes as a quart container, sold each, so a single can is one orderable unit rather than a case pack.
7) Is one quart of primer enough for a whole conduit run, or should I stock more?
A quart is a multi-project size rather than a single-joint size, which is why crews doing repeat conduit work keep it on the truck. For an MRO shelf where the can sits open-and-shut over months, buy by how fast you will turn it over, since primer flashes off once the can is opened repeatedly. VC9932 is sold each, so stocking multiples is just a quantity change.
