B-LINE BAB1050S – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the B-Line BAB1050S a bolt-on or plug-in circuit breaker?
Bolt-on. The BAB1050S mounts by bolting to the panelboard bus, so it needs a panel with bolt-on provisions. A plug-in breaker will not substitute in a bolt-on interior, and a bolt-on will not clip into a plug-in loadcenter. Confirm the panel interior accepts bolt-on BAB frame breakers before ordering.
2) What amperage and voltage is the BAB1050S breaker rated for?
50 amps at 240V, single-pole. That makes it suitable for a 240V single-pole branch circuit in a bolt-on panel. Do not apply it above 240V.
3) Does the BAB1050S support remote tripping?
It carries a shunt trip rated 120-240V, so the breaker can be tripped remotely from a control circuit at either 120V or 240V. That is what the S suffix on the catalog number denotes. Useful for elevator recall, fire alarm shutdown, or emergency disconnect schemes.
4) Can the trip setting on the BAB1050S be changed in the field?
No. The trip unit is non-interchangeable, so the 50A thermal-magnetic trip is fixed at the factory. If you need a different amperage, order a different breaker in the frame rather than trying to re-rate this one.
5) Is a thermal-magnetic breaker like the BAB1050S the right choice, or should I be looking at electronic trip?
Thermal-magnetic is the standard choice for 240V branch circuits at this size: a bimetal element handles overload and a magnetic element handles short circuit, with no settings to commission. Electronic trip units matter on larger feeder and main breakers where you need adjustable pickup and delay for selective coordination. At 50A single-pole in a branch panel, the fixed thermal-magnetic BAB is what the application calls for.
6) Is the shunt trip version the same breaker as a plain BAB150, or do I need to order differently?
Different device. The BAB1050S includes the factory-installed shunt trip accessory rated 120-240V, and the shunt trip is not something you add to a standard BAB in the field. If your drawing calls for remote trip, order the S version; if it does not, the added control wiring and 120V source are unnecessary.
