RAB T5-25-48G-850-BYP – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Do I need to remove the ballast to install a RAB T5-25-48G LED tube?
Yes. The RAB 25W T5 glass tube is a ballast bypass (direct wire) lamp, so the existing fluorescent ballast has to come out and line voltage gets wired to the sockets. Feed it 120-277V. That means a fixture rewire on every troffer or strip you convert, not a lamp swap, so budget electrician time per fixture. Once bypassed there is no ballast left to fail, which is the point of doing it.
2) Will the RAB T5 LED tube run on 277 volt lighting circuits in a commercial building?
It accepts 120-277V input, so the same tube works on 120V, 208V, 240V and 277V circuits. For a property manager or MRO buyer standardizing across a building with mixed voltages, that means one part number covers the whole facility instead of stocking a 120V and a 277V version.
3) Which color temperature should I order for the RAB 4ft T5 LED tube?
Four color temperatures are offered, one per part number: 3000K warm (T5-25-48G-830-BYP), 3500K neutral (T5-25-48G-835-BYP), 4000K (T5-25-48G-840-BYP) and 5000K (T5-25-48G-850-BYP). Warmer 3000K suits hospitality and patient-facing healthcare spaces; 3500K and 4000K are the usual office and retail choice; 5000K is what warehouses and shops get specified with. Order all fixtures in a space at one temperature, mixing them in the same room reads badly.
4) Can I put a T5 LED tube in a T8 fixture?
No. T5 and T8 lamps use different pin bases and different lamp lengths, so a T5 tube will not seat in a T8 fixture's sockets. The RAB 25W tube is a 4-foot T5, meant for fixtures already built around T5 lamps. If the fixture holds T8 lamps you need a T8 ballast bypass tube instead.
5) Does the RAB T5 LED tube qualify for a utility rebate?
It carries a DLC listing under version 5.1 of the Technical Requirements, which is the qualification most utility programs check before they pay a rebate on a linear retrofit. Rebate amounts and program rules are set by the utility, but the DLC 5.1 listing is the box the product has to tick to be considered at all.
6) How does the glass RAB T5 tube compare to a plastic LED tube for a warehouse or shop?
Glass construction is what the RAB 25W T5 uses, and it holds light transmission and shape better over long runs in heat than a coated plastic body. The tradeoff is breakage: in a shop or dock where lamps take hits, or over open food handling, a shatter-resistant plastic-bodied tube is the safer call. In offices, retail, classrooms and clinics glass is the ordinary choice.
7) Can I run the RAB T5 LED tube on a dimmer or occupancy sensor?
Treat it as a line-voltage switched lamp. Because the tube is ballast bypass and wired direct to 120-277V, an occupancy or vacancy sensor that switches the circuit works fine. A fluorescent dimming ballast, however, is removed as part of the bypass conversion, so any existing 0-10V or ballast-based dimming control in that fixture stops working once the tube goes in.
8) Will these RAB tubes match the color of the LED tubes already in the rest of my building?
Match on the color temperature suffix in the part number, not on wattage. The RAB 25W T5 is sold as 830, 835, 840 and 850, corresponding to 3000K, 3500K, 4000K and 5000K. Pull one of the existing lamps and read its temperature off the end cap, then order the matching suffix. A 4000K tube next to a 3500K tube in the same open ceiling is visible to anyone in the room.
