RAB A17-4T70 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What's the difference between Type III, Type IV and Type V on the RAB A17 area light, and which one do I need for my parking lot?
Distribution is the first thing to settle on the A17, because it decides where the light lands. Type III throws a wider forward pattern and suits perimeter rows and roadway edges where the pole sits along the side of the lot. Type IV is a forward-throw pattern aimed at the area in front of the pole, which is what you want on a building wall pack line or the back row of a lot facing in. Type V spreads in a square pattern all the way around the pole, so it goes in the middle of a lot or an open yard where you want coverage on all four sides. All three come off the same A17 body, ordered as A17-3T, A17-4T and A17-5T.
2) Does the RAB A17 LED area light run on 480 volt?
On some wattages, yes. The A17 comes in two driver builds: a 120-277V multi-volt driver, and a dedicated 480V driver marked with a /480 suffix. The 480V option is only offered at 150W, 300W and 375W (for example A17-3T150/480, A17-4T300/480, A17-5T375/480). At 70W, 100W and 200W the fixture is 120-277V only. If your site is a 480V three-phase service and you were planning on the 70W or 100W head, you'll need to step up to the 150W with the /480 driver or bring a transformer.
3) What does the 100/80/60W selectable wattage on the RAB A17 actually mean on the job?
Each A17 head is field-selectable across three wattage steps rather than fixed at one. The 100/80/60W version, for instance, can be set to run at 100W, 80W or 60W. That lets an electrician stock one part number and tune each pole to the photometric layout, or dial the whole site down after a rebate calculation. The steps offered are 70/60/50W, 100/80/60W, 150/120/100W, 200/180/160W, 300/250/200W and 375/500/250W, and each one is available in all three distributions.
4) I'm replacing 400W metal halide shoeboxes on a parking lot. Which RAB A17 wattage do I order?
For a one-for-one pole swap off 400W metal halide, the 150/120/100W or 200/180/160W A17 is the usual landing zone, since LED area lighting replaces HID at roughly a third to a quarter of the input wattage. The selectable steps help here: order the 150/120/100W head, set it high on the first pole, walk the lot at night, and drop the rest a step if it reads bright. Match the distribution to where the pole sits, Type III along the edges and Type V for interior poles. For 1000W HID replacements, go to the 300/250/200W or 375/500/250W.
5) Can the RAB A17 area light be dimmed or tied into a lighting control system?
Every A17 ships with 0-10V dimming built into the driver, on both the 120-277V and the 480V versions. That means you can wire it to a 0-10V control panel, an astronomical time clock with dimming output, or an occupancy-based scheme that drops the lot to a lower level after hours. The driver is constant current, so output holds steady at whatever level the control calls for rather than drifting with line voltage.
6) How long before the RAB A17 LEDs need replacing?
The A17 is rated at 100,000 hours of LED life. On a dusk-to-dawn photocell schedule of roughly 4,000 hours a year, that's about 25 years of service before the diodes reach their rated point. There is no lamp to change in the meantime, which is the whole argument for it on a site where every relamp means a bucket truck and a closed parking row.
7) Can I mix Type III and Type V RAB A17 fixtures on the same parking lot project?
That's the normal way to lay out a lot. All 27 A17 configurations share the same body, finish and driver platform, so a Type V at 200/180/160W on the interior poles and Type III at 150/120/100W along the property line look identical from the ground and dim off the same 0-10V control loop. Order them as separate part numbers by distribution and wattage, but they wire and control as one system.
8) What is the highest wattage RAB A17 available, and does it come in 480V?
375/500/250W is the top of the A17 range, and it's offered in all three distributions with either the 120-277V driver or the 480V driver. The 480V versions are A17-3T375/480, A17-4T375/480 and A17-5T375/480. Below that, the next step down is 300/250/200W, also available in both voltages.
9) What color is the RAB A17 area light housing? I need it to match the other poles on the property.
Bronze. That's the standard architectural finish on pole-mounted area lighting and it will sit alongside existing bronze shoeboxes and bronze poles on a campus or shopping center without looking like an odd fixture out. If your site standard is white or black housings, the A17 as offered will not match.
