RAB RMKPANEL2X4 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the RAB recessed mounting kit come in a size that matches my 2x2 LPANEL, or do I have to order a universal one?
The kit is size specific, so you order it to match the panel. Three sizes are offered: 1x4 (RMKPANEL1X4), 2x2 (RMKPANEL2X2), and 2x4 (RMKPANEL2X4). For a 2x2 LPANEL, order RMKPANEL2X2. There is no one-size-fits-all version, so match the kit to the panel size on each opening.
2) Do I get a light with the RAB RMKPANEL recessed mounting kit, or is it hardware only?
Hardware only. The RMKPANEL is a mounting kit, not a luminaire, and RAB classes it as a non-fixture item. The LED panel itself is a separate order. Contractors bidding a job need to count both lines: the LPANEL in each size and a matching kit for every panel going into a recessed ceiling.
3) I have RAB LPANELs and a hard ceiling instead of a drop grid. Do I need this kit?
Yes, that is exactly what it is for. An LPANEL drops into a standard suspended tee grid on its own; a drywall or plaster ceiling has nothing to carry it. The RMKPANEL recessed mounting kit is what gets the panel supported and sitting flush in a recessed opening. In a lay-in acoustic grid you do not need it.
4) I am standardizing panel lighting across a building with mixed ceiling types. Can I use one panel and just change the mounting?
That is the practical way to do it. Keep the LPANEL size consistent per room type, then let the ceiling decide the mounting: grid ceilings take the panel directly, and recessed hard-lid ceilings get an RMKPANEL kit in the matching size (1x4, 2x2, or 2x4). One panel SKU per size, one kit SKU per size, and the fixture on the ceiling looks the same throughout.
5) Can I use the 2x4 RAB mounting kit on a 2x2 panel to keep one part on the truck?
No. RMKPANEL2X4 is built for the 2x4 panel and will not support or trim out a 2x2. Each kit is dedicated to its panel size, so stock RMKPANEL2X2 for the 2x2 openings and RMKPANEL2X4 for the 2x4s.
6) Will the white RAB panel mounting kit be visible once the panel is in, and does it match a white ceiling?
The kit is finished in white, so any trim edge that shows reads clean against a white ceiling tile or painted drywall. That is the only finish it comes in, which keeps things simple on a fleet of offices or classrooms where every ceiling is white anyway.
