1) Does the RACO 229 box work with MC cable without separate connectors?
Yes. The RACO 229 has built-in AC/MC/Flex clamps, so armored cable, metal clad, MCI-A and flex land directly in the box with no separate cable connectors. That is the main reason to pick a clamp box over a plain knockout box on an MC job.
2) Will the RACO 229 mount to metal studs?
That is what it is built for. The 229 comes with an MS bracket made for metal stud framing, which sets the box flush with the stud face for drywall. If you are nailing into wood studs, you want a different bracket style, not the MS.
3) Can I use the RACO 229 for NM (Romex) wiring?
The clamps in the 229 are specified for armored cable, metal clad, MCI-A and flex. For nonmetallic sheathed cable, order a box with NM clamps or an NM cable connector rated for the knockout, rather than relying on these clamps.
4) What size and depth is the RACO 229 square box, and how does that affect box fill?
It is a 4 inch square box, 1-1/2 inches deep, which is the standard commercial rough-in depth for a 4 square. The 1-1/2 inch depth is the deeper of the two common 4 square depths (the other being 1-1/4), so it gives you more volume for conductors and splices than a shallow box.
5) Do I need a cover for the RACO 229, or does it come with one?
