  • Meets ANSI A156.16 specifications and is UL listed
  • For use in a 9/16" diameter hole in doors 1-3/8" to 2-1/8" thick
  • Country of origin: United States

The Rockwood 622 brass door viewer has a 190-degree viewing range. It meets American National Standards Institute (ANSI) A156.16 specifications and is UL listed. It can be installed in a 9/16" hole diameter in doors 1-3/8" to 2-1/8" thick.

Door viewers, also called peepholes, consist of a lens and cylinder which is inserted into a door, allowing a view outside. The amount of visibility is determined by the degree of the lens; the higher the number, the greater the visibility. Door viewers are sometimes incorporated with door knockers.

Rockwood Manufacturing Company manufactures door hardware. The company, founded in 1946, is headquartered in Rockwood, PA.

Rockwood ROC-622VC-CRM – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will these covers fit a 190-degree door viewer from another brand?
They are made for the Rockwood 622 and should be treated as Rockwood-specific. Viewer covers thread or snap onto the manufacturer's own barrel, and a 190-degree lens from another maker, such as the Ives U698 wide angle viewer, is a different part with its own cover. If your doors carry something other than a 622, order the cover from that maker's line.
2) What door prep and thickness does the Rockwood 622 viewer these covers fit require?
The 622 installs in a 9/16 inch diameter bore and covers doors 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/8 inch thick, which takes in standard 1-3/4 inch commercial doors and thinner older residential ones. If you are ordering covers, the prep is already in the door, but the same numbers matter when you are adding viewers to remaining openings so the whole building stays on one part.
3) Is the Rockwood 622 door viewer UL listed and does it meet ANSI?
Yes on both counts. The 622 meets ANSI A156.16 and is UL listed. That is the viewer assembly the 622VC cover belongs to, which is what matters when a fire door assembly is being inspected and a missing cover has to be replaced with the correct manufacturer part rather than a generic cap.
4) We are replacing viewers on fire rated apartment entry doors. What should we be looking at?
The Rockwood 622 viewer the 622VC covers are made for is a brass 190-degree unit that meets ANSI A156.16 and is UL listed for 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/8 inch doors. For openings where the paperwork calls out a fire rating on the viewer itself, the Ives U698 190-degree wide angle one-way viewer, the Ives U700 brass one-way viewer, the Ives U696 150-degree one-way viewer and the Ives 701 one-way brass viewer for thicker doors are all listed as fire rated, and the Hager 1756 is a 185-degree one-way viewer with a fire rating.
5) The doors are thinner than 1-3/8 inch. Is the Rockwood 622 still the right viewer?
The Rockwood 622 that the 622VC covers fit is specified for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/8 inch thick with a 9/16 inch hole. For thinner stock, the Trimco 975 at 160 degrees, the Trimco 976 at 200 degrees and the Trimco 977U with heavy duty cover are all listed down to 1-17/64 inch thickness. At the other end, the Ives 701 is a one-way brass viewer intended for thicker doors.
6) What finish is the Rockwood 622VC viewer cover?
Bright Chrome, ordered under the CRM finish code. Note that the 622 viewer body itself is brass with a satin nickel plated clear coat, so a bright chrome cover is a deliberate polished look rather than a match to the standard viewer finish. If you are trying to match existing hardware on the door, hold the cover against the escutcheon or lockset rather than against the viewer.
7) What is the closest match to the Rockwood 622 if I need the same 190-degree class of view?
The Rockwood 622 the 622VC covers serve is a 190-degree brass viewer for 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/8 inch doors. The nearest peer on viewing angle is the Ives U698, a 190-degree wide angle one-way viewer that is UL fire rated. Slightly wider are the Trimco 976 and Trimco 977U at 200 degrees, both listed for 1-17/64 inch to 2-1/8 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal PRIULDV200 with a 200-degree glass lens.
8) Do I have to drill 9/16 inch, or is there a viewer that uses a smaller hole?
The Rockwood 622 the 622VC covers belong to installs in a 9/16 inch diameter hole. If the existing bores are smaller, the Emtek 2610 solid brass door viewer is specified for a 5/8 inch diameter hole, so it suits a larger bore rather than a smaller one; verify the bore you have before choosing between them, since enlarging is possible and reducing is not.
9) Is this rated for commercial use or residential?
Rockwood classes the 622 line as residential hardware, so it suits apartments, condos and single-family units. For heavier traffic openings where covers get abused, a heavy duty cover viewer such as the Trimco 977 (200 degree, doors 1-17/64 inch to 2-1/8 inch) is the sturdier build to look at.
10) Why buy viewer covers in a 10-pack?
Covers are the part that walks off first on a multi-unit property, and they are cheap to stock against turns. Ten Rockwood 622 covers on the shelf means a unit turn does not wait on a hardware order, and every door stays on the same 622 viewer instead of drifting into a mix of brands. Make sure the doors in question actually carry the 622 before standardizing on this cover.
