Rockwood 624 CRM – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Rockwood 624 door viewer fit a 1-3/4 inch door?
Yes. The 624 viewer is built for doors 1-3/8 inch through 2 inch thick, so a standard 1-3/4 inch entry door sits in the middle of the range, and a 1-3/8 inch older interior or apartment door is covered at the thin end. Installation is a single 1/2 inch hole drilled through the leaf at eye height, with the two halves threading together from each face to clamp the door between them. Because the barrel threads, any thickness inside that range works without a different part number.
2) My door is 2-1/8 inches thick. Will the Rockwood 624 viewer still work?
No. The 624 stops at 2 inches, so a 2-1/8 inch door is past the reach of its barrel and the two halves will not draw together. For that thickness, the Hager 1759 covers 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/8 inch, and the Trimco 975 and 976 both cover 1-17/64 inch to 2-1/8 inch. Thick doors like this show up on solid-core entries with an added fire label or on doors that have had a second face applied, so measure the actual leaf rather than assuming 1-3/4.
3) What size hole do I drill for a Rockwood 624 peephole, and will it cover an existing peephole hole?
Drill 1/2 inch. That is the only prep the 624 needs, straight through the leaf at eye height. If you are replacing an existing viewer, pull it first and measure the bore: a hole already drilled to 5/8 inch is too large for the 624 barrel and the trim ring will not seat properly. For a 5/8 inch bore, the Emtek 2610 solid brass viewer is sized for that hole. Going the other way, a 1/2 inch hole can always be opened up later if you switch to a larger viewer, so drill it at 1/2 and check fit before enlarging anything.
4) I need a door viewer for a fire rated door. Is the Rockwood 624 the right choice?
The 624 is specified as a residential viewer, so for a labeled opening pick a viewer that carries the fire rating outright. The Ives U698 is a UL fire rated wide angle viewer with a 190 degree view, the Ives U696 is fire rated at 150 degrees, the Ives U700 carries a UL fire rating, and the Hager 1756 is a 185 degree one way viewer with a fire rating for 2-1/8 inch doors. Any hole cut in a labeled door has to be filled with hardware rated for it, so this is one to match on the label, not on the finish.
5) Which door viewers carry a fire rating for a labeled opening?
Four Ives viewers are fire rated: the U700 one way brass viewer with UL fire rating, the U696 at 150 degrees, the U698 wide angle at 190 degrees and UL fire rated, and the 701 one way brass viewer at 120 degrees built for thicker doors. The Hager 1756 is a 185 degree one way viewer with a fire rating, listed for 2-1/8 inch doors. The Cal-Royal PRIULDV200 is UL listed, with a 200 degree glass lens and a privacy cover, and is a privacy/bed/bath function part. For a labeled door in a corridor or stairwell, those are the part numbers to spec.
6) The doors are already bored 1/2 inch for the Rockwood 624 - will an Emtek 2610 go into the same hole?
Not without redrilling. The Emtek 2610 is a solid brass door viewer specified for a 5/8 inch diameter hole, while the Rockwood 624 installs in a 1/2 inch drilled hole. Going from the Rockwood 624 to the Emtek 2610 means opening every prepped door up by an eighth of an inch, which is a real labor item across a building. Coming the other way, a 5/8 inch bore is oversized for the Rockwood 624 barrel. If the existing 1/2 inch prep has to stand, keep to a viewer that takes the 1/2 inch bore.
7) Is a 160 degree door viewer wide enough, or should I go with a 200 degree peephole?
160 degrees, which is what the Rockwood 624 gives you, shows the landing directly outside the door and a good part of the wall to either side. It is enough for a standard apartment or house entry where the corridor runs across the door. Where you want to see someone pressed flat against the wall beside the frame, or the door opens onto a wide lobby, go wider: the Trimco 976 and the Trimco 977 with heavy duty cover are 200 degree viewers, the Cal-Royal PRIULDV200 uses a 200 degree glass lens, and the Ives U698 is 190 degrees. Wider lenses distort more at the edge of the field, which is the tradeoff for the extra coverage.
8) What is the difference between the Rockwood 624 and the Trimco 975 door viewer?
Both are 160 degree viewers, so the field of view is the same. The split is door thickness: the Rockwood 624 is built for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors, while the Trimco 975 spans 1-17/64 inch to 2-1/8 inch. If you are buying for a mixed building where some leaves run thicker than 2 inches, the 975 covers more of them from one part number. For doors that are all in the normal 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 range, either works and the 624 gives you a brass body in bright brass or bright chrome.
9) Does the Rockwood 624 door viewer meet ANSI/BHMA A156.16?
Yes. The 624 viewer is specified to ANSI/BHMA A156.16 under type numbers L03222 and L03172. A156.16 is the auxiliary hardware standard, and those L numbers are the designations a spec writer or facilities buyer cites when calling out door viewers on a hardware schedule, so the 624 can be written into a schedule by type rather than by brand.
10) Which door viewers have a privacy cover or flap on the inside face?
Three in this class name one. The Cal-Royal PRIULDV200 is a UL listed privacy door viewer with a 200 degree glass lens and a privacy cover, and it is classed as a privacy/bed/bath function part. The Hager 1759 is a 185 degree one way viewer with a privacy flap, rated for 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/8 inch doors. The Trimco 977 pairs a 200 degree lens with a heavy duty cover and fits 1-17/64 inch to 2-1/8 inch doors. On multi-family and hotel doors where residents want the eyepiece closed from the inside, that interior cover is the deciding feature rather than the lens angle.
11) Is the Ives 701 an equivalent swap for the Rockwood 624?
They are both one piece brass viewers, but they do not see the same thing. The Ives 701 is a one way brass viewer with a 120 degree viewing angle, described for thicker doors, and it carries a fire rating. The Rockwood 624 is a 160 degree viewer in brass for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors. Swapping a 160 degree eyepiece for a 120 degree one narrows what the occupant sees to either side of the opening, so on a residential entry where the tenant is used to the wider view it reads as a change rather than a like for like replacement. Where the door is thicker and the opening is labeled, the Ives 701 is the one that suits.
12) I'm standardizing peepholes across an apartment building. What finishes does the Rockwood 624 come in?
Two: 605 bright brass and 625 bright chrome. Those are the BHMA finish numbers, so 605 matches polished brass entry sets and 625 matches polished chrome or bright nickel trim on the same door. Both are the same viewer with the same 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch door range and the same 1/2 inch prep, which means you can run one finish per building or split them by wing without changing the drill.
13) Can someone outside see in through a peephole, and does the Rockwood 624 have a cover?
The 624 comes with a cover over the inside lens, which is the part that blocks a reverse view when the viewer is not in use. Tenants who care about that ask for it by name, and it is worth confirming on a spec for bed and bath or dorm rooms. If you want a heavier or purpose built privacy arrangement, the Hager 1759 uses a privacy flap, the Trimco 977 has a heavy duty cover, and the Cal-Royal PRIULDV200 is a UL listed privacy viewer with a privacy cover.
14) Which door viewers besides the Rockwood 624 have a solid brass body?
The Rockwood 624 is brass, offered in 605 bright brass and 625 bright chrome. Among the alternatives, the Emtek 2610 is a solid brass viewer for a 5/8 inch diameter hole, the Ives U700 is a one way brass viewer with a UL fire rating, and the Ives 701 is a one way brass viewer at 120 degrees for thicker doors that also carries a fire rating. Brass through the barrel matters on exterior entries and coastal work where a plated pot metal body gives up first, and it is what lets the same part number be finished in bright brass or bright chrome to match the rest of the trim on the door.
