Rockwood 621 ANT – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What size hole do I drill for a Rockwood 621 door viewer?
Drill a 1/2 inch hole through the door. Bore it square to the face, because the 621 threads together from both sides and a skewed hole will leave the trim ring sitting proud. Set the height for the shortest person who will use the door, not the middle of the leaf.
2) I need a door viewer with a privacy cover so nobody can see the light change. What are my options?
The 621 has no privacy flap. For a cover, the Cal-Royal PRIULDV200 is a UL listed privacy viewer with a 200 degree glass lens and a privacy cover, and the Hager 1759 is a 185 degree one-way viewer with a privacy flap fitting 1-3/8 to 2-1/8 inch doors. Note the Hager tops out at 2-1/8 inches, so on a 2 inch to 2-1/2 inch door the 621 may be the only one of the three that physically threads through.
3) Can I swap a Trimco 975 door viewer for a Rockwood 621 in the same hole?
The bore is not the same. The 621 wants a 1/2 inch hole, and the Emtek 2610 viewer, for one example, is bored 5/8 inch, so viewers are not interchangeable hole for hole across brands. Going from a Trimco 975 to a 621 also changes the thickness band: the 975 covers 1-17/64 inch to 2-1/8 inch doors and the 621 covers 2 inch to 2-1/2 inch, so they only overlap between 2 and 2-1/8 inches. Confirm your existing hole diameter and the actual leaf thickness before you order.
4) Is the Emtek 2610 door viewer a drop-in swap for the Rockwood 621?
They are not the same prep. The Emtek 2610 is a solid brass viewer for a 5/8 inch diameter hole, while the Rockwood 621 installs in a 1/2 inch drilled hole. Swapping an Emtek 2610 into an existing 621 opening means enlarging the bore, and putting a 621 into a 5/8 inch hole leaves the barrel loose. Both are solid brass.
5) What finishes does the Rockwood 621 viewer come in?
Two: antique bronze (ANT) and bright chrome (CRM). Bright chrome reads as a match alongside satin and bright chrome lever trim and 626/625 hardware; antique bronze is the one to pick where the entry set and knocker are dark. On a multi-family retrofit, pick the one that matches the existing lockset rose, not the door color.
6) What ANSI number does the Rockwood 621 door viewer meet?
The 621 is built to ANSI A156.16, with function numbers L03222 and L03172. A156.16 is the auxiliary hardware standard, and those L-numbers are what a spec writer or a procurement officer will want cited on the submittal for a door viewer.
7) Which door viewers are fire rated?
For a rated opening, the Ives U696 at 150 degrees, the Ives U698 at 190 degrees, the Ives U700, and the Ives 701 at 120 degrees are all carried with a fire rating, as is the Hager 1756 at 185 degrees. Match the viewing angle and the door thickness to the opening once you have narrowed to a rated model.
8) Can I standardize a building on the Rockwood 621 if some doors are thinner?
Not on one part number. The Rockwood 621 is built for 2 inch to 2-1/2 inch doors, so thinner leaves need a second viewer. Matching by angle keeps the look consistent: the Trimco 975 is also 160 degree and covers 1-17/64 inch to 2-1/8 inch. If any of the thinner leaves are labeled doors, the Ives U696 at 150 degrees or the Ives U700 carry a fire rating.
9) Is the Rockwood 621 door viewer solid brass?
Brass throughout, offered in antique bronze and bright chrome plating. Brass is what you want in a viewer body on an exterior opening, and it means the threaded barrel will not gall or corrode the way plated pot metal does after a few seasons.
10) Is the Rockwood 621 door viewer suitable for apartment entry doors in a multi-family building?
It is classed as residential hardware, and the thickness range fits the heavier apartment entry slabs that standard viewers miss. For a property manager standardizing a building, the useful detail is that both finishes take the same 1/2 inch bore, so one drill setup covers every door and you only vary the finish to match the existing lock trim.
