Rockwood 70C BSP – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size and finishes does the Rockwood 70 push plate come in?
The Rockwood 70 push plate is offered in a 4 x 16 inch plate, in two finishes: 630 satin stainless steel and BSP black suede powder. Both are the standard 0.050 gauge stainless steel plate with four beveled edges. Custom sizes can be made to order.
2) How does the Rockwood 70 push plate mount, and are screws included?
It mounts with #6 x 5/8 inch oval head sheet metal screws through the plate's screw holes, which is what ships as the standard fastener. Wood and hollow metal doors both take that screw. If you would rather not drill, the plate can be ordered SA for self-adhesive mounting on 1/16 inch double face foam tape, and that version has no screw holes at all. TEK self-drilling screws and security TORX screws are the other two fastener options.
3) Does the Rockwood 70 push plate meet a commercial hardware standard?
It is built to ANSI A156.6, type J301, and is classified as commercial hardware. That is the architectural door trim standard a spec writer or institutional buyer will be checking against for push plates.
4) What do I order for the pull side of the door to match this push plate?
The Rockwood 70 is a push plate only, so it has no handle. The pull side needs a separate pull plate. If you want the same 4 x 16 footprint, the Delaney 4 inch x 16 inch Door Pull Plate matches the size. For heavier openings, the Ives 8303 is offered with 8 or 10 inch center-to-center mounting, and the Trimco 1012 and 1013 are cast heavy duty pull plates with a 5-1/2 inch center-to-center pull.
5) What is the closest same-size alternative to the Rockwood 70 push plate in 4 inch by 16 inch?
The Delaney 4" x 16" Push Plate covers the same 4 inch by 16 inch plate footprint as the Rockwood 70, which is offered in a 4" x 16" size. The Rockwood 70 is stainless steel with four beveled edges and conforms to ANSI A156.6, J301, and ships with #6 x 5/8" OH SMS fasteners, so if your spec calls out that ANSI number or the stainless substrate, stay with the 70.
6) The door opening is only 3-1/2 inches of clear stile. What push plate should I use instead of the Rockwood 70?
For a narrow stile, the Delaney 3-1/2" x 15" Push Plate is the narrower option; the Rockwood 70 is offered in 4 inch by 16 inch. Narrow aluminum stile doors frequently will not accept a 4 inch wide plate without running into the glass stop, so measure the flat face of the stile before ordering.
7) Can I get a Rockwood 70 push plate with a cutout for a cylinder or thumbturn?
Yes. Order it with CFC for a cylinder cutout or CFTT for a turn knob cutout, using Rockwood's standard locations and sizes. That is how you use a push plate on a door that also carries a mortise lock cylinder or a deadbolt turn instead of trimming the plate in the field.
8) Can the Rockwood 70 push plate be engraved with PUSH or a room name?
Engraving is available on plates 4 inches wide or wider, so the 4 x 16 size qualifies. You specify the copy at time of order and Rockwood uses its standard engraving locations. Useful for institutional and school openings where the wording has to be consistent across a building.
9) Is 0.050 gauge stainless heavy enough for a high-traffic entry door?
0.050 is Rockwood's standard gauge, in stainless steel with four beveled edges, and it is intended for commercial openings, offices, retail, schools, detention, sports facilities and hotels. For an entry that takes abuse and needs a stiffer, thicker plate, look at heavy duty cast plates such as the Trimco 1010 Series or the Ives 8302 with through bolt mounting.
10) Can I use an Emtek push and pull plate in place of the Rockwood 70 on a commercial storefront?
The Emtek Modern, Knoxville, and lost wax cast bronze Petal push and pull plates are decorative sets. The Rockwood 70 is stainless steel, standard gauge 0.050, designated commercial, and conforms to ANSI A156.6, J301, which is the line a written hardware schedule usually references. If the opening is a design-driven residential or hospitality door, the Emtek sets are the styling alternatives; if the submittal cites the ANSI number, use the 70.
11) My door has an exit device on it. Is the Rockwood 70 the right plate?
Not on the exit device side. The Detex P/PN Series pull plate is made to pair with Detex Value Series exit devices, so if the opening uses one of those devices that is the matched trim. The Rockwood 70 is a plain push plate for the push face; it can be ordered with cylinder cutouts (CFC) or turn knob cutouts (CFTT) if the door has a cylinder or thumbturn passing through the plate area.
12) Can I get a heavier bevel on the Rockwood 70 push plate?
Heavy bevel is available, specified as HVBEV, on models 70A through 70G. The standard plate already carries four beveled edges. Heavy bevel is worth asking for where the plate edge sits in a path people brush against.
13) What is the difference between the Trimco 1013 and 1014 pull plates if I am pairing one with a Rockwood 70 push plate?
The Trimco 1013 is a round heavy duty pull plate with a 5.5 inch center-to-center pull, and the Trimco 1014 Series is a half-round pull plate with a 6 inch center-to-center pull. Grip shape and spacing are the difference: the 6 inch spacing gives a wider hand opening. Either can face a Rockwood 70 push plate, which is a flat stainless plate with four beveled edges in 4 inch by 16 inch.
14) I need the plate in black, not stainless. What are my options versus a standard finish plate?
The Rockwood 70 is offered in BSP black suede powder as well as 630 satin stainless steel, both in 4 inch by 16 inch, so you can get black without switching manufacturers. If the pull side also needs to be dark, the Emtek Petal lost wax cast bronze push and pull plates are the cast bronze alternative in this group.
