Rockwood 70REC32D416 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What does ANSI A156.6 J301 mean on a push plate, and does it matter for a school or hospital spec?
J301 is the ANSI/BHMA A156.6 designation the 70REC is built to, which is the standard covering architectural door trim. On an institutional spec that calls out A156.6 trim by J number, quoting J301 against the line is what gets it approved without a substitution request. The plate is a commercial-duty item in stainless steel, US32D satin finish.
2) Can I get a push plate with a cutout for the cylinder or thumbturn so it fits over my lock?
Yes. Rockwood cuts the 70 series plates for a cylinder (specify CFC) or a turn knob (CFTT). You have to call it out on the order, since the plate ships solid otherwise. That is the usual way to run a full height push plate on a door that also carries a deadbolt or a keyed cylinder in the same stile.
3) Do I need a pull plate on the other side of the door to go with this push plate?
A push plate has no handle, it is just the protection plate for the push side, so the pull side of the door needs its own hardware. Delaney makes a matching 4 x 16 inch pull plate in the same footprint. For a heavier commercial opening, Ives 8302 is a heavy duty pull plate with through bolt mounting, and Ives 8303 comes with 8 or 10 inch center to center pull mounting. Trimco's cast options run 5 inch CTC on the 1010, 5.5 inch on the 1012 and 1013, and 6 inch on the 1014.
4) What is the closest 4 inch by 16 inch push plate to the Rockwood 70REC from another brand?
Delaney's 4" x 16" Push Plate covers the same plate footprint, so it drops onto the same door face and the same push side without changing the layout. If the door needs a grip rather than a flat push face at that size, Delaney also builds a 4" x 16" Door Pull Plate in the same footprint. The Rockwood 70REC is a stainless steel plate with four beveled edges and ships with #6 x 5/8" OH SMS fasteners.
5) Is a pull plate the same thing as the Rockwood 70REC push plate?
No, and they are not interchangeable on the same leaf. The 70REC is a flat plate that protects the door face where hands push it - there is nothing on it to grab. A pull plate carries a handle mounted to the plate: the Ives 8302 is a heavy duty pull plate with through bolt mounting, and the Ives 8303 is a heavy duty pull plate offered in 8" or 10" center-to-center mounting. On a pair of doors the push plate goes on the push side and a pull plate goes on the pull side, so most jobs buy both rather than choosing between them.
6) Is 0.050 gauge stainless heavy enough for a high traffic door, or do I need a heavier plate?
0.050 is Rockwood's standard gauge and it is what goes on most commercial openings, offices, retail, schools, hotels. It is stainless steel, so it takes cleaning chemicals and hand traffic without pitting the way a plated finish does. Where you are pushing a door open by the plate itself day in and day out (a kitchen, a loading corridor), the wear point is the fastening, not the sheet, so consider the TEK self-drilling screw option on a metal door for a tighter bite.
7) I need a push plate that isn't 4 x 16. Does Rockwood make other sizes in the 70 series?
Custom sizes in the 70 series are made to order, so a narrow stile door or an odd cutout can be accommodated rather than forcing the standard 4 x 16. If you would rather stay with a stock size, Delaney builds a 3-1/2 x 15 inch push plate that suits a narrower stile.
8) Are there tamper resistant screws for a push plate in a detention or public restroom setting?
Specify TORX and the 70 series ships with security Torx screws instead of the standard #6 x 5/8 inch oval head sheet metal screws. That is the option to use anywhere the plate is reachable by the public and you do not want it coming off with a common driver. Rockwood trim of this kind is used in detention and institutional buildings.
9) I need a decorative push plate for a hotel or lobby door rather than the plain Rockwood 70REC. What are the options?
The 70REC is a plain stainless steel plate with four beveled edges, built for institutional buildings, offices, retail, education, detention, sports facilities, hotels and restaurants. Emtek sells push and pull plates as matched sets in decorative patterns: the Modern series, the Knoxville series, and the Petal series in lost wax cast bronze. Those come as push and pull pairs, so the two sides of the opening carry the same design.
10) Can the Rockwood 70REC push plate be used on a door with an exit device?
The 70REC is a general purpose push plate that mounts to the door face with #6 x 5/8" OH SMS screws, and it can be ordered with cylinder cutouts (CFC) or turn knob cutouts (CFTT) where hardware passes through the plate. It is not built around any one exit device. If the opening uses a Detex Value Series exit device, the Detex P/PN Series pull plate is the trim made for that device, so the plate and the device are dimensioned to each other.
11) I am standardizing push plates across a facility. Does the Rockwood 70REC or a Delaney plate give me a matched push and pull set?
Both lines are built in matched pairs. Delaney offers a 4" x 16" Push Plate with a 4" x 16" Door Pull Plate, and a 3-1/2" x 15" Push Plate with a 3-1/2" x 15" Door Pull Plate, so a facility can standardize on one footprint across both sides of every opening. The Rockwood 70REC is the 4" x 16" round corner push plate in stainless steel, and the 70 series accepts engraving on plates 4" wide or wider, which is how facilities get consistent room or department copy across a building.
12) Does the heavy bevel option apply to the 70REC round corner plate?
No. Heavy bevel (HVBEV) is offered on models 70A through 70G only. The 70REC comes with the standard four beveled edges.
13) What is the difference between a half-round and a round pull plate if I am pairing one with a Rockwood 70REC push plate?
Both refer to the shape of the pull that sits on the plate, which changes how the hand wraps it. Trimco's 1014 Series is a half-round pull plate with a 6" center-to-center pull, while the 1013 is a round heavy duty pull plate with a 5.5" CTC pull. The CTC figure is the fastening spread you are drilling for, so it needs to be settled before the door is prepped. The 70REC push plate on the opposite face is a flat plate with four beveled edges and takes no pull prep at all.
