Rockwood ROC-BFRC24-US32D – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the BFRC24 rod cover clear my surface vertical rod, or will it bottom out on it?
Projection is the number that decides it. The BFRC24 stands 1-5/8 inches off the door face, so any rod and its mounting brackets have to sit within that depth. Measure from the door face to the outermost point of the rod assembly, brackets included, not just the rod itself. Width is 3-1/4 inches, so the rod and bracket footprint needs to fall inside that too.
2) What fasteners come with the Rockwood BFRC24 rod cover and do I need anything else to mount it?
It mounts with #6 x 5/8 inch oval head sheet metal screws. That screw length tells you what it's meant for: a 5/8 inch SMS bites into a hollow metal door face or a wood door, it is not a through bolt. If you're mounting to a door where sheet metal screws won't hold, plan on the appropriate anchor for that substrate.
3) What finish does the Rockwood BFRC24 come in, and will it match my other stainless door hardware?
One finish: 630, satin stainless steel, the same as US32D. That is the standard commercial satin stainless used on push plates, kick plates, pulls and exit device trim, so it lines up with the bulk of stainless hardware already hanging in most institutional and commercial buildings. The cover itself is stainless steel, not plated brass, so the finish goes all the way through the base material.
4) Will a vertical rod cover stop people from defeating my exit device, or do I need a latch guard instead?
Different problems. A rod cover like the BFRC24 shields the exposed vertical rod running up or down the door face, so nobody can grab, bend, or pry the rod itself. A latch guard or astragal covers the gap at the latch and strike to stop someone shimming the bolt. If your vulnerability is at the door edge and frame, the rod cover doesn't address it. If your rod is out in the open on a surface vertical rod device, this is the part for it. Concealed vertical rod devices don't need one at all, since the rod is already inside the door.
5) Is the Rockwood BFRC24 rod cover meant for commercial doors or will it work in a house?
Rockwood rates it commercial. It's stainless and screw mounted for the traffic you get in institutional buildings, offices, retail, schools, detention, sports facilities, hotels and restaurants, and it also gets specified in higher end residences. In practice it goes where there is a surface vertical rod exit device to protect, which is a commercial opening far more often than a residential one.
