ROFU 1400-08 RH – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How do I know whether to order a left hand or right hand ROFU 1400 solenoid?
Handing on the ROFU 1400 solenoid is opposite the strike model in some cases, so go by the model number on the strike, not the door. Specify an RH solenoid for the 1401, 1430LH and 1440LH. Specify an LH solenoid for the 1430RH and 1440RH. The 1400-G Series solenoid is centered, non handed, and works for all models except the 1430 and 1440. Get this backwards and the plunger sits on the wrong side of the keeper.
2) What voltages does the ROFU 1400 electric strike solenoid come in?
Three coil options: 8-16 VAC/3-6 VDC, 12 VAC/VDC, and 24 VAC/VDC. Match the coil to the power supply already feeding the strike, since the solenoid is the coil, and dropping a 12 volt coil onto a 24 volt supply is how you cook one. Each voltage is offered in left hand, right hand, and centered G-Series.
3) Can I leave a ROFU 1400 solenoid energized all the time?
Only on DC. The 1400 solenoid is rated continuous duty on VDC and intermittent duty on VAC, with the AC energized period not exceeding 10 seconds. So a fail secure opening held unlocked all day, or any application where the strike stays powered, has to run on a DC supply. AC is for buzz-to-release, momentary door release only.
4) Will one ROFU 1400 solenoid cover a mixed set of strikes across a building?
Partly. If your openings run 1401 strikes and other non-1430/1440 models, the 1400-G Series centered solenoid is non handed and covers all of them, which is the part to stock if you want one shelf item across a property. The 1430 and 1440 are the exception, they will not take the G Series and need a handed solenoid, LH or RH, chosen against the strike's own suffix. You still have to keep them separated by voltage.
5) My ROFU strike buzzes but will not release. Do I need a new strike or just the solenoid?
A buzzing strike that will not release is usually the solenoid, and ROFU sells the 1400 solenoid as a replaceable part rather than making you swap the whole strike body. Pull the model number off the existing strike first, then order the matching handing and coil voltage. If the housing, faceplate and keeper are undamaged, the solenoid swap puts the opening back in service.
6) What do I have to specify when ordering a ROFU 1400 electric strike solenoid?
Two things decide the part number: handing and coil voltage. Handing is left hand, right hand, or centered for the 1400-G Series. Voltage is 8-16 VAC/3-6 VDC, 12 VAC/VDC, or 24 VAC/VDC. That is nine combinations in total. Have the strike model number in hand when you order, because the handing rule runs off the strike model, not the swing of the door.
7) Is the ROFU 1400 solenoid a commercial grade part or for residential doors?
Commercial. The 1400 is a service part for ROFU commercial electric strikes used in access control openings, and it is ordered by strike model, handing and coil voltage rather than by door type. Residential wiring practice does not really apply here, the strike's own power supply dictates the coil you buy.
