ROFU 8403F-12 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the difference between the ROFU 8403M, 8403F and 8403S?
Mounting, and that is the only choice you make when ordering. The 8403M-12 is a mortise unit for sliding doors, so the magnet buries into the edge. The 8403F-12 front or top mounts. The 8403S-12 comes with a mounting plate for standard surface mount. The magnet body differs with it: the M is 7-7/8 x 1-1/4 x 15/16 inches, while the F and S are both 6-11/16 x 1-1/4 x 15/16 inches. All three take the same armature plate at 6 x 1-1/4 x 3/8 inches.
2) Does a ROFU 8403 maglock release when the power goes out?
Yes, it is fail-safe. Cut power to the 8403 and the magnet releases instantly, and there is no residual magnetism holding the armature after the drop. That means a power failure leaves the cabinet or locker unlocked, so it is the wrong choice anywhere the contents must stay secured through an outage. Plan for the cabinet to open when the building loses power.
3) Is there a magnetic lock with delayed egress instead of instant release like the ROFU 8403?
The ROFU 8403 is fail-safe and releases instantly when power is disconnected, and it is not recommended for life safety or high security applications. Where a delayed egress function is required on the opening, the Camden CX-DE1200 Series Exit Watch is a single door delayed egress magnetic lock. That is a different release behavior on the door, so the choice follows what the authority having jurisdiction requires for the egress path.
4) What magnetic lock should be used on a full-size single swing door instead of the ROFU 8403?
The ROFU 8403 is a micro electromagnet built for compact openings such as small cabinets, drawers, lockers and safes, with a 300 LB holding force. For a standard single swinging door, the Camden CX-91S Series is a single door magnetic lock, sized and intended for that opening rather than for cabinet work. Both are electromagnetic locks, so the release logic and power supply approach are familiar from one to the other; the difference is the size of opening each is built around.
5) Which magnetic lock covers a pair of doors when the ROFU 8403 only suits a single compact opening?
The Camden CX-92 Series is a double door magnetic lock, so one assembly covers both leaves of a pair. The ROFU 8403 is a micro electromagnet supplied in mortise, front or top mount, and standard surface mount versions for compact applications such as cabinets, drawers, lockers and safes, so a pair of doors would be outside what it is built for.
6) Do I need to buy the armature plate separately for a ROFU 8403?
The armature plate is part of the specification on all three 8403 versions at 6 x 1-1/4 x 3/8 inches. The 8403S-12 additionally comes with a mounting plate for surface installation. What you supply on the job is the 12 VDC power and the fasteners suited to your cabinet material.
7) Will a mini maglock hold up in a damp or outdoor cabinet?
The 8403 uses a weather resistant cable connection, which is the point most electromagnets fail first, and the housing is nickel plated steel. That covers a damp equipment enclosure or a covered exterior cabinet. It is a commercial rated unit, not a residential one.
