ROFU 9700 US40 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the ROFU 9700 REX button hold up in a public corridor where people push on it hard or try to pry the plate off?
That's what the 9700 is built for. The button sits in a 1/4 inch thick aluminum cover plate, the head is metal surrounded rather than plastic, and the plate mounts with two snake eyes security screws so it can't be backed out with a common driver. The wrench for those screws ships with the switch. For a school hallway, a lobby, or a multi-family common door, that's the difference between a switch that survives and one that gets pulled off the wall.
2) Do I order the ROFU 9700 as normally open or normally closed?
Both are orderable, and the choice comes down to what the switch is wired into. NO-Momentary closes the circuit only while the button is held, which is the usual pick for triggering a REX input or a relay on an access control panel. NC-Momentary breaks the circuit while held, which is what you want when the button has to interrupt a power feed, for example dropping a maglock directly. Either way the contact is momentary, not maintained, so the door releases only for as long as somebody is on the button.
3) Can I run a maglock through the ROFU 9700 push button directly, or does it have to go through a panel?
The contact is rated 3A at 240V, so it will carry a typical 12V or 24V DC maglock or strike load directly if you order the NC-Momentary version and break the power feed with it. Check the current draw of the lock against that 3A figure before you wire it in line. If the lock pulls more than the contact is rated for, run the button into a relay or the access panel's REX input instead and let that switch the load.
4) What size wall plate does the ROFU 9700 exit button use, and will it fit on a narrow mullion?
Two plate sizes are offered. The standard plate is 4-3/4 x 3 x 1/4 inches, and the narrow plate is 4-3/4 x 1-5/8 x 1/4 inches. On a narrow aluminum mullion or a tight glass-front stile where you don't have 3 inches of flat face, the narrow plate is the one that lands. Measure the flat width you actually have before you pick, because a standard plate on a narrow mullion will overhang the glass stop.
5) What finishes does the ROFU 9700 push button come in, and will it match the aluminum storefront doors I already have?
Finish is specified at order as either US28 clear aluminum or US40 dark anodized bronze. Those are the two anodized finishes storefront and curtain wall are normally supplied in, so on a clear anodized entrance the US28 plate blends with the frame, and on a dark bronze entrance the US40 matches. The button head itself is red on both, which is intentional on an exit device so it reads as the release under low light.
6) Is the ROFU 9700 exit switch a single-pole switch or does it have Form C dry contacts?
SPST, single pole single throw, and you pick the state when you order it, either normally open or normally closed. That covers most REX and maglock releases. If your panel or interface needs both a NO and an NC contact off the same button, a Form C device is what you're after. The Detex PB-2100 Series push button control is offered with Form C terminals and a shroud, and is the one to look at when the wiring calls for a changeover contact.
7) Is the ROFU 9700 push button UL listed?
The 9700 is built with UL Recognized Components. That is a component-level recognition, not a listing of the assembled switch, which is the normal way a REX button is qualified. If your AHJ or spec calls for a listed release device on a fire rated or egress opening, take the recognition on the components to the reviewer rather than assuming the whole device carries a listing mark.
8) Does the ROFU 9700 come with the mounting hardware, or do I need to buy the security screws and driver separately?
Everything to mount the plate ships with it, two snake eyes security screws plus the wrench that drives them. You will not need a special tool order. What is not in the box is the back box or ring, the wire, and whatever relay or power supply the lock side of the circuit needs, so plan those into the job separately.
9) Is the ROFU 9700 button flush or does it stick out of the plate?
Flush head, 1-1/4 inches across. The face of the button sits level with the cover plate rather than proud of it, so a cart, a ladder, or somebody's shoulder going past won't trip the door open by brushing it. That matters on a corridor door where the button is at push height in a traffic lane. If you want a button people can find without looking, the flush head is a tradeoff worth knowing about going in.
10) Is the ROFU 9700 REX switch rated for commercial use or is it a residential product?
Commercial. It is a request-to-exit switch made for access controlled openings, with a metal head, a 1/4 inch aluminum tamper resistant plate, and security screws, which is specification typical of a commercial installation rather than a home one. Property managers standardizing exit buttons across a portfolio of commercial buildings can run the same 9700 on every controlled door and just change plate size and finish per opening.
