1) What is the Sargent 1KA and what does it actually do on a mortise lock?
The 1KA is the cylinder rosette that trims out a mortise cylinder on Sargent 7800/8200 sectional trim. It's a 1-1/2 inch (38mm) square rose with a compression spring behind it, so the cylinder sits square to the door and stays under tension. It is not a cylinder and not a lock body. If the cylinder itself is worn or you are rekeying, the 1KA only replaces the visible ring and spring.
2) Do I get a cylinder with the Sargent 1KA rosette, or do I order that separately?
You choose. The rosette can be ordered with a standard cylinder, less cylinder if you are reusing the one in the door, or prepped for an interchangeable core without the core: option 70 for small format IC prep and 60 for large format IC prep. If you take an IC prep option you still need to supply the core. Pick less cylinder when you're only replacing a damaged or mismatched rose.
3) Will the 1KA rosette work with my 8200 mortise lock trim?
Yes, it's the matching cylinder rose for 8200 sectional trim, and it comes standard with the E, E2, E3 and E4 roses. Sargent covers 7800 and 8200 mortise locks with sectional rose trims and escutcheon trims in a single installation template, so the prep is the same family of openings. If your door has escutcheon trim rather than sectional roses, the cylinder is trimmed by the escutcheon plate and this rosette isn't the part you need.
4) Can I get Sargent 1KA rosettes keyed alike across a building?
Keying is specified at order: keyed different, keyed alike, or to a key code you supply. Keyed alike is the choice when a property manager wants one key to open a run of doors; keyed different keeps each opening separate, which is the usual pick for tenant suites. If you're matching an existing system, order to key code and give the code. Select the none keying option when you order less cylinder.
5) What finishes does the Sargent 1KA cylinder rosette come in, and can I match the rest of my door hardware?

6) My mortise cylinder spins or sits loose in the door. Is the 1KA rosette the fix?
Often, yes. The 1KA carries the compression spring that keeps the cylinder pressed out against the rose, and when that spring is tired or the rose collar is the wrong depth the cylinder rocks or turns in its hole. Replacing the rosette assembly restores the tension. If the cylinder set screw in the lock case is backed out or stripped, that's a lock body issue and a new rose won't hold it.
7) Does the Sargent 1KA rosette work with an interchangeable core keying system?
It can be ordered prepped either way. The 60 option gives large format interchangeable core prep and 70 gives small format, both supplied without the core so you can install cores from the system you already run. A conventional key system is the standard build. Institutional buyers standardizing a facility on IC generally want the prep option so cores can be pulled and rotated without taking the trim apart.
