1) What does the passage function on the Sargent 8315 exit device actually do?
Passage function means the outside lever is always unlocked. Push the pad from inside to exit, and turn the lever from outside to get in at any time, with no key involved. That suits corridor doors, stairwell re-entry, and interior openings where you want free flow both directions but still need a listed exit device on the door. If you need the outside trim to lock, the 8315 is the wrong function in the 8300 Series.
2) Will a Sargent 8315 fit an aluminum storefront door with a narrow stile?
The 8315 is built as a narrow stile mortise exit device, so it is the 8300 Series variant intended for doors with limited stile width, which is the usual situation on aluminum entrances. Wide stile mortise devices will not fit that rail. Check the actual stile measurement on your door against the Sargent template before you cut.
3) Do I have to specify handing when ordering the Sargent 8315?
Yes, handing is a required choice: RHR (right hand reverse) or LHR (left hand reverse). A mortise device is handed because the latch and the lock case are cut into the lock edge of the door. Stand outside the door, on the side it swings away from, and if the hinges are on your right it is RHR. Get this wrong and the device will not work on the opening.
4) Does the Sargent 8315 come with outside lever trim or do I order that separately?
Trim is a separate selection. You can take the device on its own (Exit Device Only) or add ET trim in eight lever designs: ETA, ETB, ETE, ETF, ETJ, ETL, ETP and ETW. If anyone needs to enter from the outside, you need one of the ET lever options; without it the opening is exit only from that side.
5) My door has a wide stile, so the Sargent 8315 will not fit. What mortise exit device should I use?
Right, a narrow stile device is the wrong tool on a wide stile leaf. Wide stile mortise options we stock include the Corbin Russwin ED5600AL, Grade 1 and 3 hour fire rated for 1-3/4 inch doors, accepting passage or classroom lever trim; the Falcon 25-M-EO exit only Grade 1 at 1-3/4 inch; the Von Duprin 9875 smooth case, non-handed Grade 1; and the Adams Rite 3300 Series, which is fire rated and works on wood and hollow metal doors. If the opening needs a passage function with outside lever like the 8315, the ED5600AL with passage lever trim is the closest wide stile match.

Twelve finishes are offered: 03 bright brass, 04 satin brass, 09 bright bronze, 10 satin bronze, 10B dark oxidized satin bronze oil rubbed, 10BE, 10BL, 20D dark statuary bronze lacquered, 32 bright stainless, 32D satin stainless, plus BSP black suede powder coat and WSP white suede powder coat. For most commercial buildings 32D satin stainless is the standard match, and BSP or WSP are the ones that blend with painted aluminum storefront.
9) Can I put a Sargent 8315 on a wood door?
The 8315 is a narrow stile device, and narrow stile openings are almost always aluminum storefront rather than wood. If your opening is a wood or hollow metal door, look at a wide stile mortise device rated for it, such as the Adams Rite 3300 Series, which is listed for wood and hollow metal and is fire rated. Several wide stile mortise devices, including the Von Duprin 8875 and 9875, are specifically listed as not wood door compatible.
10) I need to standardize exit hardware across a building where some doors lock and some do not. Can I stay in the Sargent 8300 Series?
