1) What does fail-safe mean on the Sargent 8373 electrified exit device?
Fail-safe on the 8373 refers to the electrified ET trim: when power drops, the outside lever unlocks and the door can be opened from the pull side. Inside egress is never affected, since the push rail always retracts the mortise latch mechanically regardless of power. If you need the outside lever to stay locked during a power failure, fail-safe is the wrong choice and you want a fail-secure electrified trim instead.
2) Do I have to specify handing when ordering the Sargent 8373?
Yes, handing is required. The 8373 is ordered either RHR (right hand reverse) or LHR (left hand reverse). Exit devices are always on the egress side of an outswinging door, which is why both options are reverse bevel. Stand outside the door, on the pull side: if the hinges are on the right it is RHR. Getting this wrong on a mortise device means the lock case is unusable, since unlike some crossbar devices such as the Von Duprin 5575 it is not field reversible.
3) Can I get the Sargent 8373 fire rated, and what do I lose if I do?
A fire rated version is offered, and it is supplied less dogging. Fire doors have to positively latch every time they close, so mechanical dogging that holds the latch retracted is not permitted. If you want to dog the device open during business hours, you need the standard (non fire rated) configuration, or you use one of the electric options such as 56 remote dogging or 58 electric dogging on a non fire opening.
4) What size Sargent 8373 do I order for a 3 foot door?
Device lengths run 32, 36, 42 and 48 inches. A standard 3 foot (36 inch) door takes the 36 inch device. Size the rail to the actual door leaf width, not the opening, and for the AL alarmed option you need a door at least 36 inches wide, so alarmed is not available on the 32 inch device.
5) Is the Sargent 8373 12 volt or 24 volt?
Both. Voltage is a required selection at order, 12V or 24V. Match it to the power supply already feeding the opening, since a 24V device on a 12V supply will not reliably release the trim. If you are standardizing a building on one access control power supply, pick the voltage that matches it across all openings.
6) What narrow stile mortise exit device can I use instead of the Sargent 8373 on an aluminum storefront door?
The Sargent 8373 is a narrow stile mortise exit device from the 8300 Series with Grade 1 performance. If you need another narrow stile mortise device for aluminum, the Adams Rite 8400 Series is a narrow stile life-safety mortise exit device specified for aluminum doors, and the Von Duprin 5575-3ft is a narrow stile crossbar mortise lock exit device in 3 ft, Grade 1 and field reversible. Note the 8373 carries electrified fail-safe trim, while the Adams Rite 8400 and Von Duprin 5575 are mechanical devices, so an access control opening would need its electrification handled another way.
7) Which mortise exit devices are fire rated if the Sargent 8373 fire rated option does not work for my opening?
The Sargent 8373 is ordered either Standard or Fire Rated (Less Dogging). For other fire rated mortise devices, the Adams Rite 3300 Series is a fire rated Grade 1 wide stile mortise device for wood and hollow metal doors, and the Corbin Russwin ED5600AL is Grade 1 with a 3 hour fire rating for 1-3/4 inch doors. Be aware that several comparable mortise devices are not fire rated, including the Adams Rite 8300 and 8400 Series and the Von Duprin 5575, 8875, 9475/9575 and 9875.
8) Does the Sargent 8373 come with a cylinder?
No cylinder is supplied with the 8373. It is the fail-safe electrified trim version with no cylinder, so if the application calls for key control on the outside you order a mortise cylinder separately in the keyway your building is keyed to, along with the correct cam and length for the trim.
9) What lever trim choices are there on the Sargent 8373, and can I order the device without trim?
Eight ET trim lever styles are available: A, B, E, F, J, L, P and W levers. You can also order the device by itself with no trim, which is what you do when the outside is a pull only or when trim is being supplied separately. Several electric options can be specified: 53 latchbolt monitor switch, 54 internal micro switch in the ET control, 55 signal switch in the rail, 56 remote dogging / latch retraction, 58 electric dogging, 59 Electroguard, and AL alarmed exit. For an access control integrator, 53 is the one that reports actual latch position back to the panel, while 55 reports the push rail being pushed. They are separate functions, so if you need both door secure status and request-to-exit you specify both.
11) Should I use a mortise exit device like the Sargent 8373 or a rim device?
A mortise device puts the lock case inside the door stile and latches into the frame jamb, which gives a cleaner look and a concealed lock body but requires the door to be mortise prepped. A rim device surface mounts and latches into a strike on the face of the frame, so it is far easier to retrofit onto a door that is not already prepped. Choose the 8373 mortise version when the door has, or will get, mortise prep and you want the narrow stile profile; choose rim when you are replacing surface hardware without reworking the door.
12) What is a comparable narrow stile mortise exit device if the Sargent 8373 does not suit the job?

15) I need a non-handed mortise exit device - does the Sargent 8373 work or should I look elsewhere?
The Sargent 8373 is ordered by hand, either RHR right hand reverse or LHR left hand reverse, so the handing has to be confirmed at the door before ordering.
