1) Will the Sargent 855 signal switch kit fit my existing Sargent 80 Series exit device?
Yes. The 855 universal retrofit signal switch kit is made for Sargent 80 Series exit devices in both wide and narrow stile versions, and also fits the 8800 and 8888 panic bars. It covers door widths from 24 to 48 inches, so it works on both narrow single leaves and full-width openings without changing kits.
2) Can a request-to-exit switch be added to an exit device already installed in the door, or does the whole device have to be replaced?
The 855 is a field-installable retrofit kit, so the switch is added to a push rail that is already hung. Wiring runs directly through the push rail. That handles a typical low-voltage control circuit: use it to de-energize an electromagnetic lock, trigger a local alarm, or initialize a delayed egress board. For loads above 2 A or any line-voltage load, switch a relay with it rather than wiring the load through the switch directly.
4) Will the Sargent 855 work on another brand's exit device, like a Von Duprin or Precision bar?
No. Despite the universal name, the 855 kit's stated compatibility is Sargent push rail hardware only: 80 Series wide and narrow stile exit devices plus 8800 and 8888 panic bars. For a different manufacturer's device, order that maker's own REX switch option for the specific series.
5) Does the 855 kit give normally open and normally closed contacts for an access control panel?
Form C contacts, which is what SPDT means: one common with both a normally open and a normally closed leg. An access control panel or delayed egress controller can be wired to whichever state it expects, and the contact transfers when the push rail is depressed.
