Satco Lighting S11429 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I put the Satco S11429 dusk to dawn bulb on a dimmer switch?
No. The S11429 A19 is not dimmable, so it needs a standard non-dimming switch circuit. Putting it on a dimmer can cause flicker, buzz or early failure. It also has a built-in photocell that turns it on at dark and off at daylight, so the switch it is on has to stay energized 24/7 for the dusk to dawn function to work at all.
2) Will this Satco dusk to dawn LED work in an outdoor porch or wall lantern fixture?
Yes, within limits. The 8.5W A19 is rated for damp locations and listed for indoor or outdoor use, so a covered porch light, soffit fixture or enclosed wall lantern is fine. It is not rated for wet locations, so keep it out of anything with direct rain exposure or standing water. It is also enclosed rated, so a sealed jelly-jar or lantern globe is acceptable.
3) Does the photocell bulb need to face down, or can it be installed base-up?
Burning position is universal, so the lamp can go base-up, base-down or horizontal. The practical catch is the photocell: it has to see ambient light. If the fixture shrouds the sensor or the lamp sits where a nearby light source hits it, the bulb will either stay off at night or cycle. Aim the sensor side toward open sky or an unobstructed part of the globe.
4) Is 2700K with 90 CRI the right color for apartment entries and common areas?
2700K is warm white, the same color tone as an incandescent, so it matches existing incandescent or halogen entry lighting rather than looking blue against it. The 90 CRI rating means colors, including skin tones and paint finishes, render close to natural. For multi-family entries, lobbies and corridors where you want the light to read as residential rather than commercial, that combination is the usual pick. It is a fixed color; there is no CCT selector switch on this lamp.
5) How wide does the light spread from this A19 photocell lamp?
200 degree beam spread, which is effectively omnidirectional for an A-lamp; light goes out to the sides and well back toward the base. That suits open fixtures, lanterns and bare sockets where you want general area coverage. If you need light thrown in one direction, like a downlight or a flood aimed at a walkway, a reflector lamp is the better tool.
6) How long does the Satco S11429 last before maintenance has to change it out?
Average rated life is 15,000 hours. On a dusk to dawn duty cycle that averages roughly 12 hours a night, that works out to about 3.4 years of continuous seasonal operation per lamp, which is the number to use when scheduling exterior relamping rounds.
7) Can I use this Satco bulb in a three-way lamp socket?
It will screw in, but it is not a three-way lamp, so it will only operate at full output on the positions that energize it and will not step through low, medium and high. For a three-way table or floor lamp, order a lamp specifically built as three-way instead.
8) What is the housing made of and what color is it?
The lamp housing is white polycarbonate with a high heat conductive plastic body, which is how it sheds heat without a metal heat sink and part of why it can be run in an enclosed fixture. There is one version of the lamp, in white.
