Satco Lighting S12402 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use the Satco S12402 LED A15 in an enclosed fixture or outdoors?
Both are allowed. The 5W A15 is an enclosed rated lamp, so sealed globes and jelly-jar fixtures are fine, and it carries a Wet location rating for indoor or outdoor use. It also burns in any position, so base-up, base-down or horizontal sockets all work.
2) What incandescent wattage does a 5W LED A15 replace, and how much light does it put out?
The Satco S12402 draws 5 watts and replaces a 40W incandescent, delivering 450 lumens at 120 volts. Current draw is 0.042A, so on a 15A circuit the load per lamp is negligible if you're relamping a whole building.
3) What does 4000K at 90 CRI look like, and will it match my other bulbs?
4000K is a neutral white, cooler and cleaner looking than a 2700K warm incandescent and warmer than a 5000K daylight lamp. At 90 CRI color rendering is high, so finishes, paint and skin tones read accurately, which is why it gets specified in corridors, lobbies and healthcare spaces. If the rest of your fixtures are 2700K or 3000K, this lamp will look visibly whiter next to them. Color temperature is fixed, not selectable, so order the same 4000K across the group you want to match.
4) Is this Satco A15 dimmable, and will it work on a three-way socket?
Dimming is supported on the 5W A15. Three-way is not: it's a single-level lamp, so in a three-way socket it will light at one output only. For three-way table lamps you need a lamp built for it.
5) Does the clear glass on this LED A15 mean you can see the filament?
Yes, it's an LED filament lamp behind a clear glass lens, so the filament strips are visible, the way a clear incandescent looks. That suits open-shade fixtures and exposed sockets where the lamp is part of the look. If you want the light source diffused and hidden, pick a frosted or satin lamp instead.
6) Will a clear LED filament A15 throw light in all directions like the incandescent it replaces?
Close to it. Beam spread is 320 degrees, so output is nearly omnidirectional, which is what you want in a chandelier, ceiling fan kit or open sconce where the lamp has to light upward as well as down. It's not a directional reflector lamp, so don't use it where you need a controlled spot.
7) Can the Satco S12402 be sold and installed in California?
Yes. Satco lists the 5W LED A15 as lawful for sale in California. It is FCC compliant as well. It is not DLC listed, so if your utility rebate program requires a DLC qualified product, this lamp won't qualify for that incentive.
8) How long does the Satco 5W LED A15 last, and is that enough for high ceilings or hard-to-reach fixtures?
Rated average life is 15,000 hours. On a 12 hour per day common-area schedule that works out to roughly three and a half years between relamps, which is the main reason property managers swap incandescent A15s out of stairwell and exterior fixtures.
9) What is this Satco A15 bulb made of, and is glass a problem for tenant fixtures?
Construction is aluminum and glass, with a glass lens. Aluminum in the base section carries heat away from the LED; the glass envelope is rigid and won't yellow the way some plastic lenses do, but it is breakable, so for areas where impact is a concern a polycarbonate-lens lamp is the safer spec. Each lamp weighs 0.05 lb.
