Satco Lighting S16400 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I install the Satco S16400 T8 LED without removing the existing fluorescent ballast?
No. The S16400 is a Type B ballast bypass lamp, so the fixture's fluorescent ballast has to be removed and line voltage wired direct to the sockets. It is single ended, meaning line and neutral both land on one end of the lamp. That is electrical work on the fixture, not a lamp swap, so plan on a qualified electrician and relabeling the fixture as line voltage.
2) Will this T8 LED run on 277 volts in a commercial building?
Yes, the S16400 is rated 120V through 277V at 50/60Hz, so the same lamp works on 120V residential circuits and 277V commercial lighting branch circuits. Current draw is 0.075-0.0325A, running 9 watts.
3) Can this Satco T8 LED go in an enclosed fixture or a damp location like a parking garage or bathroom?
Enclosed rated, so a sealed or gasketed fixture is acceptable, and it carries a damp location rating. Damp covers covered walkways, bathrooms and garages. It is not rated wet, so do not use it where water will hit the lamp directly or where the fixture takes standing rain.
4) Can I put the Satco 9W T8 LED on a dimmer?
No. The 9W 4000K T8 is non-dimmable, and it is not CCT selectable or three-way either. Wire it to an unswitched-dim circuit or a plain on/off switch. On a dimmer you risk flicker and early failure.
5) Is 1200 lumens from a 9W T8 LED enough to replace what is in my fixture now?
At 1200 lumens and 4000K it is a 40W incandescent equivalent output. That is a modest light level for a linear lamp, so in a multi-lamp strip it reads fine, but if you are replacing a full-output 32W T8 fluorescent in a one-lamp fixture expect noticeably less light. The 360 degree beam spread and frosted lens spread it evenly rather than aiming it.
6) Does the 4000K color on this lamp match the other tubes in my building?
4000K is neutral white, the common commercial office and corridor color, and it holds a CRI of 83. It will not match 3500K or 5000K tubes side by side in the same room, so if you are relamping only part of a space, check what color the existing lamps are. The color is fixed, not field selectable.
7) Does this Satco T8 LED qualify for a DLC utility rebate?
No. The S16400 is not DLC listed, so it will not qualify for utility rebate programs that require DLC qualification. It is FCC compliant and Title 24 compliant, which matters for California installations.
8) Does it matter which way up I mount this T8 LED tube?
Burning position is universal, so it can be installed in a horizontal strip, vertically, or in a pendant with no derating. Rated life is 50,000 hours.
9) What part number do I order for the Satco 9W 4000K single ended T8 LED?
Order Satco Lighting S16400. It is the 9W, 4000K, 1200 lumen T8 LED with a frosted lens, Type B single ended ballast bypass wiring, on a recessed double contact HO/VHO base.
