Satco Lighting S16440 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Satco S16440 T8 LED tube need the existing fluorescent ballast removed?
Yes. The S16440 is a Type B ballast bypass lamp, so the fluorescent ballast has to be removed or bypassed and line voltage wired directly to the sockets. It runs on 120-277V at 50/60Hz. If you want a lamp that plugs into an existing working ballast with no rewiring, a Type B tube is the wrong choice.
2) Can I wire the Satco S16440 to one end only, or does it need power at both ends?
Either works. The S16440 is single or double ended, so you can feed line and neutral into one end through a non-shunted socket, or run line to one end and neutral to the other on shunted sockets. That flexibility is why it suits retrofits where you do not want to swap every lampholder.
3) What color temperatures does this 36W Satco T8 LED produce, and do I pick one at install?
The lamp is CCT selectable with 4000K, 5000K and 6500K on board, chosen at the lamp rather than ordered as separate part numbers. Output shifts with the setting: 5000 lumens at 4000K, 5200 at 5000K and 4900 at 6500K. CRI is 83 across the board. For a facility standardizing on one look, order the one part number and set every tube the same.
4) Does the Satco S16440 qualify for a DLC utility rebate?
No. The S16440 is not DLC approved, so it will not clear utility programs that require a DesignLights Consortium listing. It is Title 24 compliant and FCC compliant. If the rebate paperwork drives the job, you need a DLC-listed lamp instead.
5) Can I put the Satco S16440 on a dimmer?
No. The S16440 is not dimmable and it is not three-way capable. On a dimming circuit expect flicker or no start at all, so it belongs on a plain switched line-voltage circuit. If the space needs dimming control, specify a dimmable LED tube instead.
6) Is this T8 LED tube okay in a parking garage or unheated warehouse?
It is rated for indoor use with a damp location rating, so a covered garage, canopy or unheated indoor bay is within scope. It is not a wet-location lamp, so keep it out of direct exposure to rain or washdown. Burning position is universal, meaning it can be mounted horizontally, vertically or at any angle.
7) Will a 36W LED tube actually replace the HO fluorescent lamps in my fixture for light output?
At 36W the lamp puts out 4900 to 5200 lumens depending on the color setting, with a 125W incandescent equivalence stated and a 360 degree beam spread so light is thrown all the way around rather than one direction. Rated life is 50,000 hours. The frosted plastic lens diffuses the output, which keeps the diode image down in open strip fixtures.
8) Is this a glass tube or shatter resistant?
The S16440 is built with a plastic lens and a polycarbonate base rather than glass, which matters in food service, schools and warehouse aisles where a dropped glass tube is a cleanup and safety problem.
