Satco Lighting S23160 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I just screw the Satco S23160 LED corncob into my existing HID fixture and leave the ballast in place?
No. The S23160 is a Type B ballast bypass lamp, which means the existing HID ballast has to be removed or bypassed and line voltage wired directly to the medium base socket. Leaving the ballast in the circuit will not work and can damage the lamp. Line voltage has to be 277V to 347V at 50/60Hz, so this is not a lamp for a 120V or 240V fixture.
2) Will the S23160 run on 120V or 277V only?
277V through 347V only. The S23160 is built for high voltage commercial and industrial circuits, drawing 0.065 to 0.052A across that range. On a 120V or 208/240V circuit it is the wrong lamp, so check the fixture's supply voltage at the socket after the ballast is bypassed before ordering.
3) How do I set the color temperature on this CCT selectable corncob lamp, and what are the lumens at each setting?
Three field selectable settings: 3000K, 4000K and 5000K, using Satco's ColorQuick selector. Output shifts slightly with the setting, 2340 lumens at one setting, 2520 at another and 2430 at the third, all at 80 CRI. For a warehouse or parking area most crews run 5000K; 3000K is the choice when it has to match warmer interior or canopy lighting.
4) What HID wattage does an 18W LED corncob like this actually replace?
At 18 watts the S23160 puts out up to 2520 lumens with a 300 degree beam spread, and Satco rates it as a 90W incandescent equivalent. That output level suits low wattage HID retrofits such as small wall packs, canopy fixtures and post tops. For a 250W or 400W metal halide fixture you need a much higher wattage corncob, not this one.
5) Can I use this LED corncob in a fully enclosed outdoor fixture?
Yes. The S23160 is an enclosed rated lamp, so a sealed acorn, wall pack or lantern with a closed glass lens is a legitimate application. It is rated for damp locations indoor or outdoor, which covers a covered canopy or soffit but not a spot where the lamp is exposed to direct rain or standing water.
6) Can this corncob lamp be installed base up or horizontally?
Any orientation. Burning position is universal, so base up, base down or horizontal all work, which matters in post tops and wall packs where the socket points up. The 300 degree beam spread means light comes off nearly the whole lamp body rather than one face, so the existing reflector does most of the aiming.
7) Is the Satco S23160 dimmable?
No, it is not a dimmable lamp and it is not three-way. Put it on a circuit with a dimmer or a photocell-plus-dimming control and you will get flicker or premature failure. For dimmed areas pick a lamp rated for dimming; for this one the control needs to be straight on/off switching.
8) Does this Satco lamp qualify for a DLC utility rebate?
No. The S23160 is not DLC listed, so it will not qualify for utility programs that require DesignLights Consortium listing. It is FCC compliant and Title 24 compliant, so California energy code jobs are covered even though the rebate path is not.
9) How long do these LED HID replacement lamps last before maintenance has to go back up the ladder?
Rated at 50,000 average hours. On a dusk to dawn exterior schedule of roughly 4,000 hours a year that is better than a decade of service, which is the usual argument for retrofitting HID in high-access-cost locations. There is no ballast left in the circuit after the bypass, so the ballast failure mode goes away too.
10) What is the S23160 made of and how heavy is it for an old porcelain socket?
Aluminum heat sink with a polycarbonate body, clear plastic lens, dark gray housing, and it weighs 0.57 lb. That is light enough for a standard medium screw socket in any orientation, though a brittle old porcelain socket in a 277V HID fixture is worth replacing while the fixture is open for the ballast bypass.
