Satco Lighting S2838 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Satco S2838 wedge base LED work on 120V line voltage?
No. The S2838 T5 LED is a 12 volt lamp and has to run on a 12V supply, such as a low voltage landscape or step light circuit with a transformer. Putting it on a 120V line voltage socket will destroy it. If your fixture is line voltage, you need a 120V lamp instead.
2) Can I put the Satco S2838 on a dimmer?
No, the S2838 is not a dimmable lamp. On a dimmed low voltage circuit expect flicker, buzz, or no start at all. If the fixtures are on dimmers, specify a dimmable 12V wedge lamp instead. It is also not a three-way lamp.
3) What incandescent wedge bulb does this 1.6W Satco LED replace?
The S2838 draws 1.6 watts and is rated as a 10 watt incandescent equivalent, so it drops into the same 12V wedge socket as a 10W mini incandescent while cutting the load to about 0.133 amps per lamp. On a long low voltage run that lets you put a lot more lamps on the same transformer.
4) How many of these 12V wedge LEDs can I run on one transformer?
Each S2838 pulls 0.133 amps at 12 volts, roughly 1.6 watts. Divide your transformer's rated VA by that to size the run, and leave the usual headroom for wire loss on long cable pulls. Compared with the 10 watt incandescent it replaces, you get about six times as many lamps on the same supply.
5) Will this Satco wedge LED match the warm color of the incandescent lamps already in my fixtures?
Yes, close. The S2838 is a fixed 3000K warm white, not color selectable, so every lamp out of the box reads the same. Standard 12V incandescents sit a bit warmer around 2700K, so in a mixed run you may see a slight difference; changing out a whole bank at once keeps the look consistent.
6) Is this a spot or a flood beam, and can I mount it any direction?
It's a wide flood. The S2838 throws a 120 degree beam through a white lens, so light spreads broadly rather than punching a narrow spot, which suits step lights, cove and display applications. Burning position is universal, so base up, base down or horizontal all work.
7) Does the Satco S2838 count toward California Title 24 lighting requirements?
Yes, the S2838 is Title 24 compliant and FCC compliant. It is not DLC listed, so if a utility rebate program you are filing under requires a DLC listing, this lamp will not qualify for it.
8) How long do these 12V wedge LEDs last before maintenance has to relamp?
Satco rates the S2838 at 100,000 average hours. For a property running low voltage path or step lighting overnight, that is a relamp interval measured in years rather than seasons, which is usually the reason to move off 10W incandescent wedges in the first place.
9) What does the Satco S2838 look like installed, and will it be visible in an open fixture?
It's a T5 tubular LED lamp with a white housing and a white lens, so in an open or exposed fixture it reads as a white diffused tube rather than a clear glass bulb with a visible filament. If you need a clear, sparkle look, this is not the lamp.
