Satco Lighting S49936 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I just drop the Satco S49936 LED T8 into my existing fluorescent fixture without rewiring?
Yes. The S49936 is a Type A ballast-dependent lamp, so it runs off the existing fluorescent ballast in the fixture. You pull the old T8 fluorescent and put this one in the same medium bi-pin sockets, no rewiring and no ballast bypass. The trade-off is that the lamp only works as long as that ballast works; when the ballast fails, the lamp stops and you are back in the fixture anyway.
2) Will an 11W LED T8 at 1800 lumens be bright enough to replace a 32W fluorescent tube?
At 1800 lumens it reads dimmer than a typical new 32W T8 fluorescent, which is why it suits corridors, storage, stairwells, and parking areas more than task spaces like shops or exam rooms. Satco rates it as a 150W incandescent equivalent. If your space is already over-lit on four-lamp troffers, the drop is usually unnoticed; on a single-lamp strip over a work surface, step up in lumens instead.
3) Does this T8 LED tube qualify for utility rebates and California Title 24?
Both are covered. The S49936 is DLC approved, which is what most utility prescriptive rebate programs require for linear LED lamps, and it is listed Title 24 compliant for California work. It is also FCC compliant.
4) Is this 4 foot LED T8 dimmable on my existing dimming ballast?
The lamp itself is listed as dimmable, but because it is a ballast-dependent Type A lamp, the dimming behavior is controlled by the ballast it is installed on, not by the lamp. On a standard non-dimming instant-start or programmed-start ballast it runs at full output only. Dimming only happens if the fixture already has a dimming ballast driving it.
5) Can I use this LED T8 in a parking garage, cooler, or covered exterior walkway?
Indoor use, damp location rated. That covers unconditioned interior spaces, covered walkways, and similar damp areas, but it is not a wet-location lamp, so keep it out of direct spray, rain exposure, or open weather. Burning position is universal, so the fixture can be mounted horizontally, vertically, or in a strip at any orientation.
6) What voltage does the Satco S49936 LED T8 work on for commercial 277V lighting circuits?
It covers 120V through 277V at 50/60Hz, so the same lamp works on 120V residential or light commercial panels and on 277V commercial branch circuits. Current draw is 0.092 to 0.040A across that range. Since it runs off the fixture ballast, the ballast also has to be rated for the circuit voltage you are on.
7) Is this tube glass or plastic, and does that matter for where I install it?
The S49936 is glass, with a gloss white glass lens and a 0.4 lb weight. Glass tubes are fine in enclosed troffers and standard strip fixtures, but in gyms, kitchens, food prep areas, or anywhere breakage is a concern, specify a shatter-resistant coated or plastic-bodied T8 instead, or run a lens or wire guard over the fixture.
8) How does light distribution from this LED T8 compare to the fluorescent tube it replaces?
Beam spread is 210 degrees, so output is directional rather than the full 360 degrees a fluorescent tube throws. In a troffer or wrap with a reflector that is usually a gain, since less light is bounced and lost. In an indirect or uplight fixture that relies on light leaving the top of the tube, you will lose some of the intended distribution and may need to rotate the lamp in the sockets to aim it.
9) How long will these LED T8 lamps last before maintenance has to re-lamp again?
Rated at 50,000 average hours. On a 12 hour per day schedule that is roughly 11 years of service. Keep in mind this is a ballast-dependent lamp, so in practice the ballast in the fixture will often be the component that ends the run first; on older fixtures many MRO buyers plan on either replacing the ballast at install or moving to a ballast-bypass type lamp.
