Satco Lighting S49977 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Satco S49977 4-foot LED T8 work with my existing fluorescent ballast, or do I have to rewire the fixture?
It's a Type A lamp, so it runs off the existing ballast in the fixture. Ballast required. You drop it into the same medium bi-pin sockets and leave the wiring alone. If your fixture's ballast is dead or you intend to remove it, this is the wrong lamp for that job, you'd need a Type B (direct wire) or Type A/B tube instead.
2) Can I use this LED T8 in a parking garage, stairwell, or warehouse with damp conditions?
Damp location rated and classified for indoor use. That covers covered parking, stairwells, unheated warehouse bays, and similar spaces where condensation is possible but the lamp isn't exposed to direct water. It is not a wet location lamp, so open-air or hose-down areas need a different product. Burning position is universal, so it can be mounted horizontally, vertically, or in a pendant strip.
3) Is 4000K going to match the tubes already in the rest of my building?
The S49977 is fixed at 4000K, a neutral white, and it is not a color-selectable lamp. If your other fixtures are running 4100K cool white fluorescents, 4000K reads very close and most people won't pick it out across a corridor. Against 3500K or 5000K tubes you will see the difference in the same room. Relamp a full space at a time rather than mixing.
4) Will this LED tube dim on my existing fluorescent dimming system?
The lamp itself is dimmable, but as a Type A lamp the dimming is controlled by the ballast it's installed on. It will dim where the fixture already has a dimming T8 ballast and a compatible control. On a standard instant-start or program-start non-dimming ballast you get full output only, regardless of the lamp's dimmable rating.
5) What voltage does this 4-foot LED T8 run on, and can I use the same lamp on 120V and 277V circuits?
Rated 120V through 277V at 50/60Hz, so the same lamp stocks for both 120V office branch circuits and 277V commercial lighting panels. Current draw runs 0.117A at the low end of the voltage range down to 0.051A at the high end. Since it's ballast dependent, the ballast in the fixture also has to be rated for that line voltage.
6) Is 82 CRI good enough for an office or retail relamp?
At 82 CRI, color rendering is on par with the standard 700/800-series fluorescent tubes most offices, schools, and warehouses already run, so a relamp won't look worse than what's up there. For spaces where color judgment matters, paint selection, apparel retail, medical exam rooms, specify a 90+ CRI lamp instead. The 210 degree beam spread gives the wide, even distribution a lensed troffer or wraparound needs.
7) What does the Satco S49977 replace in terms of incandescent wattage?
Satco rates the output as equivalent to a 175W incandescent while drawing 14 watts. That matters most on retrofits of older strip or utility fixtures, and it's the number that goes on an energy savings calculation sheet alongside the 2200 lumen output.
