Satco Lighting S8748 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Satco S8748 LED PL lamp need the existing ballast removed?
Yes. The S8748 is a Type B ballast bypass lamp, so the fluorescent ballast has to be removed and line voltage wired directly to the GU24 socket. It runs on 120V to 277V at 50/60Hz, so it works on both residential and commercial line voltage, but it will not operate through a ballast.
2) Will this Satco 8W LED PL lamp fit a GU24 twist-lock socket?
It is built with a bi-pin GU24 base, so it twists into a standard GU24 socket. It will not fit G24q or GX24q 4-pin fluorescent sockets or a screw-base Edison socket without changing the socket.
3) Can I use the Satco S8748 on a dimmer?
No. The S8748 is non-dimmable and has no three-way function. Put it on a plain on/off switch. On a dimmer circuit you can get flicker, buzz or early failure, so if the fixture is dimmed you need a different lamp.
4) Is this LED PL lamp OK in a closed ceiling fixture or a shower trim?
It is an enclosed rated lamp, so a sealed or gasketed fixture is acceptable. It also carries a universal burning position, meaning base up, base down or horizontal all work, which covers recessed cans, wall sconces and ceiling drums.
5) Can I buy the Satco S8748 for a project in California?
No. The S8748 is flagged non-compliant for California, so it should not be specified for jobs subject to California lighting regulations. It also is not DLC approved, which rules it out of utility rebate programs that require DLC listing. It is FCC compliant.
6) What light output and color should I expect replacing a 40W incandescent with the Satco S8748?
The lamp draws 8 watts and puts out 960 lumens at 4000K, rated as a 40W incandescent equivalent. 4000K is a neutral white, noticeably cooler and cleaner-looking than the warm 2700K of the incandescent it replaces, so in a unit where other fixtures are still warm white the color shift will be visible. CRI is 83.
7) Does this Satco PL lamp qualify for a federal Buy American job?
No. The 8W GU24 PL lamp is listed as not BAA compliant, so it will not satisfy Build America, Buy America requirements on federally funded work. Use a BAA compliant lamp for those specs.
8) Is the Satco S8748 color selectable or does it only do one color temperature?
Single color temperature only, fixed at 4000K. There is no CCT selection switch, so if you need 2700K or 3000K to match adjacent fixtures you have to order a different lamp rather than change a setting on this one.
9) How wide is the light spread from the Satco S8748, and does it glare?
Beam spread is 120 degrees, which is a broad wash rather than a spot, suitable for general ambient lighting in corridors, baths and closets. The frosted lens diffuses the LEDs so you are not looking at bare diodes, and the housing is white.
10) How much current does the Satco S8748 draw for circuit loading on a multi-fixture retrofit?
Current draw runs 0.067A at 120V down to 0.029A at 277V, at 8 watts per lamp. At that load a large number of lamps fit on a single 15A or 20A branch circuit, which is why these swap well across an apartment or corridor retrofit. Rated life is 50,000 average hours.
