Satco Lighting S8890 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the Satco S8890 T8 LED tube run on my existing fluorescent ballast, or do I have to rewire the fixture?
Either way works. The S8890 is a Type A/B lamp: it will operate on a compatible existing ballast (Type A) or you can bypass the ballast and wire line voltage direct to the sockets (Type B). That is the point of an A/B tube for a retrofit crew, you can drop it in today on the ballast and go back later to bypass when the ballast fails. It also accepts single-ended or double-ended wiring on the bypass side, so it suits either socket arrangement.
2) Will a 13W T8 LED tube give me enough light to replace a 32W fluorescent in an office troffer?
The S8890 puts out 1850 lumens at 13 watts, which is in the range of a typical 4-foot delamped or lower-output fluorescent, not a full 32W F32T8 at roughly 2800 to 3000 lumens. Satco rates it as a 50W incandescent equivalent. If you are matching foot-candles in an office on a one-for-one swap of 32W lamps, run the math on your fixture count first; if you are relamping corridors, storage, or multi-lamp troffers where you have more light than you need, it fits well.
3) Is this T8 LED tube rated to go in an enclosed or wraparound fixture?
It is an enclosed-rated lamp, so sealed wraps, vapor-tight strips, and covered troffers are all fair game. It also carries a Damp location rating, which covers covered exterior walkways, parking structure soffits, and bathrooms, but not direct water exposure or wet-location use.
4) Will the 3000K color match the other tubes in my building?
The S8890 is fixed at 3000K, a warm white, with a CRI of 83. It is not a selectable-CCT lamp, so you cannot field-adjust it. Most commercial office and school relamps are specified at 3500K or 4000K; 3000K reads noticeably warmer, so if you are mixing it into an existing run of cooler tubes the difference will be obvious. Use it where the whole space or circuit is being changed over.
5) Does the S8890 work on 277 volt circuits in a commercial building?
Yes. It is rated 120V through 277V at 50/60Hz, so the same lamp covers 120V tenant spaces and 277V commercial lighting branch circuits. That matters most on a Type B bypass, where line voltage goes straight to the pins, and it means you stock one part number across both circuit types.
6) Does this Satco T8 LED qualify for utility rebates or California Title 24?
It is DLC listed and stated as Title 24 compliant, which is what most utility prescriptive rebate programs ask for on a linear LED retrofit, and what California energy code work requires. It is also FCC compliant. Bring the DLC listing and the S8890 part number when you file the rebate paperwork.
7) Can I dim these T8 LED tubes?
The lamp itself is listed as dimmable, and it draws between 0.108A and 0.047A, a range consistent with dimmed operation. How you dim depends on the install: on a Type B bypass you need a compatible line-voltage dimmer on the circuit, and on Type A operation the dimming is governed by the existing dimmable ballast. A standard non-dimming instant-start ballast will not dim it.
8) Does it matter which way I rotate the tube in the socket, and how wide does the light spread?
Burning position is universal, so you can install it in a surface strip, a recessed troffer, a pendant, or base-up without derating. The frosted lens spreads light over a 180 degree beam angle, which is the full downward hemisphere you want out of a linear lamp, with no hot spot or visible diode line.
9) How long before I have to relamp these again?
Satco rates the S8890 at 50,000 average hours. For a property manager running lights roughly 12 hours a day, that is on the order of a decade before the lamp is at end of rated life, which is the real argument for the swap on hard-to-reach fixtures like high-bay strips or stairwell runs.
