Satco Lighting S9495 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What incandescent or halogen MR16 does the Satco S9495 replace, and will the room look the same?
It replaces a 50 watt halogen MR16 while drawing 6.5 watts, putting out 500 lumens at 2700K with an 80 CRI. 2700K is warm white, so the color of the light stays in the same range as the halogen you are pulling out. The 40 degree beam is a flood spread, so if the old lamps were narrow spots you will notice a wider, softer pool on the wall or counter.
2) Can I put this LED MR16 in an enclosed recessed can or a sealed fixture?
Yes. The S9495 is an enclosed rated lamp, so it can go in a sealed or fully enclosed housing where a non-rated LED would cook itself and fail early. It also burns in any position, base up, base down or horizontal, so tilted eyeball trims and uplights are fine.
3) Can this MR16 go in a bathroom, a covered exterior soffit or a shower trim?
Damp location rated, so covered porches, soffits, bathrooms and enclosed shower trims rated for damp use are within spec. It is not wet location rated, so keep it out of anywhere exposed to direct rain or spray, like an open landscape fixture or an uncovered eave.
4) Can I specify Satco S9495 on a federal job with Buy American requirements?
No. The S9495 is not BAA compliant, so it will not satisfy a Build America, Buy America requirement on a federally funded project. It is FCC compliant and lawful for sale in California. For a BAA job you need a lamp the manufacturer lists as compliant, so screen on that field before you spec.
5) How many of these Satco MR16 lamps can I run off one 12V transformer?
Each lamp draws 0.542 amps at 12 volts, 6.5 watts. Divide your transformer's rated VA by 6.5 and stay under about 80 percent of that for headroom. A 60VA transformer that carried one 50 watt halogen will now carry several of these, but watch the minimum load spec at the other end, since undersized loads are the common problem with LED conversions, not overloading.
6) How long will these last before maintenance has to relamp again?
Rated at 25,000 hours. On a hospitality or common area schedule of roughly 12 hours a day that is about 5.7 years per lamp, against the roughly 2,000 to 4,000 hours typical of the 50 watt halogen it replaces. That is the whole case for the swap on a fleet of fixtures: the labor of pulling trims stops being an annual line item.
7) Will the Satco S9495 match the color of the LED MR16 lamps already in my other fixtures?
It runs 2700K at 80 CRI, warm white. If the neighbouring lamps are 3000K or 4000K the difference is visible side by side, so match on the Kelvin number rather than on brand. This one is fixed color, not color selectable, so there is no switch on the lamp to bring it to 3000K. Standardizing a building on a single Kelvin value is the only way to keep a run of downlights looking consistent.
8) Does this lamp qualify for a DLC utility rebate?
No. The S9495 is not on the DLC approved list, so it will not qualify for utility incentive programs that require a DesignLights Consortium listing. If a rebate is driving the retrofit, screen candidate lamps on DLC status before ordering the fleet.
9) Does this Satco MR16 have a covered lens or an open reflector face?
Lensed, with a clear lens over the face and a gray housing. The clear lens keeps the beam defined rather than diffusing it, and it closes off the LED face, which matters in kitchens and any fixture that collects dust or grease. The gray body is the only finish it comes in.
