Satco Lighting S9704 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Satco S9704 A19 LED work in an enclosed ceiling fixture or a closed globe?
Yes. The S9704 is an enclosed rated lamp, so it can go into a closed glass globe, a jelly jar, or a flush drum fixture where heat builds up. It also burns in any position, base up, base down, or horizontal, so recessed cans and pendants are both fine. Location rating is damp, so covered porches, bathrooms, and laundry rooms work; it is an indoor lamp and is not rated for wet locations or open weather exposure.
2) Can I dim the Satco S9704 LED bulb, and will it work on my existing dimmer?
The S9704 is dimmable on 120V, 60Hz line voltage. Older incandescent dimmers were built for a 60 watt resistive load and this lamp only pulls 0.083 amps, so a handful of legacy dimmers will flicker or drop out at the low end of the slider. If you are relamping a dimmed circuit across a building, put one in and run the dimmer through its full travel before you buy the rest.
3) Does the Satco S9704 meet California Title 24 for a residential or multi-family project?
Yes, the S9704 is California T24 listed, which is what gets it accepted in California residential work where high efficacy lighting is required. It is also FCC compliant. It is not DLC listed, so if your utility rebate program requires a DLC qualified product number, this lamp will not satisfy that paperwork.
4) Is 90 CRI worth it over a standard 80 CRI LED bulb?
Depends on what the light lands on. The S9704 renders at 90 CRI, which is the threshold where paint, wood tone, fabric, and skin stop looking flat. That matters in hotel rooms, model units, retail, exam and treatment spaces, and anywhere a tenant compares two rooms side by side. For a back of house corridor, a stairwell, or a mechanical room, an 80 CRI lamp does the same job for less. The 3000K color and 90 CRI together are what most people mean when they say a space looks warm rather than institutional.
5) How often will I be back up the ladder relamping these Satco A19 bulbs?
Rated life is 25,000 hours. On a common area or corridor fixture running 12 hours a day that is a little over five and a half years before the lamp reaches rated life; on a tenant unit running 3 hours a day it is well past 20 years. For a property manager pricing out a relamp, the labor of the ladder trip usually costs more than the lamp, which is the argument for doing a whole floor at once rather than replacing failures one at a time.
6) Can I use the Satco S9704 in a three-way lamp socket?
No. The S9704 is a single output lamp with no three-way function, so in a three-way socket it will either stay at one brightness through the clicks or not light on the low tap at all. For a three-way table lamp you need an A19 specifically built as three-way. If the fixture is on a wall dimmer rather than a three-way socket, this lamp is fine, it is dimmable.
7) Will the Satco S9704 match the other 3000K bulbs already in my building?
On color temperature, yes, it is a fixed 3000K lamp with no tunable or selectable CCT setting, so every one you order lights the same. Where you can still see a difference is CRI: this lamp is 90 CRI, and if the surrounding fixtures hold 80 CRI lamps, the S9704 will look slightly richer and the older lamps slightly washed out next to it. In a corridor or an open area, relamp the whole run rather than mixing.
8) Does the Satco S9704 have a glass bulb that can shatter?
No glass envelope. The lens is frosted PS plastic over a metal and plastic base, with a white housing, so a dropped lamp or a bumped fixture does not scatter glass. That matters in schools, kitchens and food prep areas, gyms, and anywhere over a bed or a walking path. The frost lens also hides the individual LED dies, so you do not get the hot dots you see through a clear lamp in an open shade.
9) How many Satco S9704 bulbs can I put on one 15 amp lighting circuit?
Each lamp draws 0.083 amps at 120V, so the load per bulb is tiny compared to the 60 watt incandescent it replaces. That is why a circuit that was maxed out on incandescent A19s has a lot of headroom after a relamp. Watch the fixture and the control instead of the breaker: LED lamps at this current can fall below the minimum load some occupancy sensors and older electronic dimmers need to hold on.
