Schaub 651-AD – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the Schaub 651 knob a single-hole mount, and can it replace an existing knob?
It is a single screw knob using an 8/32 thread, so it mounts in one bore and drops straight into the hole left by any standard American cabinet knob. Nothing to redrill as long as the previous knob was also a single-hole 8/32 type. At 1-1/2 inches in diameter it will cover most existing bores and minor scuffing around them.
2) What is a plain solid brass alternative to the Schaub 651 Fair Isle knob without the shell inlay?
The Schaub 651 is a 1-1/2 inch round cabinet knob built from solid brass with an Imperial Shell inlay in the Fair Isle collection. If the design calls for brass without an inlaid face, the Delaney Solid Brass Cabinet Knob is a solid brass cabinet knob, and the Deltana KRB175 is a heavy-duty solid brass round knob with a groove detail at 1-3/4 inch diameter, which is a quarter inch larger across than the 651.
3) Are the Emtek Schaub Collection knobs the same thing as the Schaub 651?
They are related but not interchangeable designs. The Schaub 651 belongs to the Symphony Inlays style, Fair Isle collection, with an Imperial Shell face. Emtek's Schaub Collection offerings are separate series: the Emtek 8665 Select, the Allerton, the Art Deco, and the Astoria Glass cabinet knob, each catalogued as a cabinet knob/pull rather than as a Symphony inlay knob. Choose by the series name, not by the Schaub association alone.
4) How far does the Schaub 651 cabinet knob stick out from the door face?
Projection is 1-1/4 inches, with a 1/2 inch base where it meets the door. That gives plenty of finger clearance behind the knob, which matters on inset doors or anywhere a door swings close to an adjacent wall or appliance.
5) What is the Schaub 651 knob actually made of, and is the shell real?
The body is solid brass with a genuine Imperial Shell inlay, white mother of pearl, set into the face. The metal is finished in Aged Dover. Because the inlay is natural shell, colour and figure vary slightly piece to piece, so order the full quantity for a run of cabinetry at one time if you want the closest match.
6) What else could I use if I want a decorative inlay knob but not shell?
Emtek sells the Schaub Collection through its SELECT line, and the Astoria glass cabinet knob is the closest alternative if you want a decorative face without natural shell. For a plain metal look instead of an inlay, the Delaney solid brass cabinet knob or the Deltana KRB175 round knob with groove are straight brass forms.
7) Is the Schaub Fair Isle shell knob suitable for a rental or high-traffic commercial kitchen?
The brass body handles traffic, but the face is a natural mother of pearl inlay, which is a decorative surface and will show wear from rings, keys, and abrasive cleaners faster than plain metal. For turnover units or heavy institutional use, a solid brass knob with no inlay, such as the Deltana KRB175 or the Delaney solid brass knob, is the more practical choice. Save the Fair Isle for owner-occupied kitchens, baths, and millwork features.
8) If I need a larger diameter knob than the Schaub 651 for a heavy drawer front, what should I look at?
The Schaub 651 measures 1-1/2 inch in diameter with a 1-1/4 inch projection. For a bigger grip on a tall or heavy drawer front, the Deltana KRB175 is a heavy-duty solid brass round knob at 1-3/4 inch diameter.
9) I want a decorative inlaid or glass face instead of shell on my cabinet knobs. What else is available?
The Schaub 651 carries an Imperial Shell, white mother of pearl inlay on a solid brass body. For a different decorative face, the Emtek Astoria Glass Cabinet Knob uses a glass knob in the Astoria series, and the Emtek Art Deco Cabinet Knob is a patterned series knob. Both are catalogued as cabinet knob/pull designs.
10) For a rental or high-traffic kitchen where an inlaid knob feels too delicate, what is a simpler round knob to specify instead?
For heavier day-to-day use, two plainer round options are the Orca Hardware CK-18032 Mission Round Cabinet Knob from the Mission collection and the Orca Hardware CK-19032 Whistler Cabinet Knob, both catalogued as cabinet knobs. The Schaub 651 is a Symphony Inlays design with an Imperial Shell face, which suits display and feature cabinetry where the inlay stays the focus.
11) Will a substitute knob use the same mounting screw as the Schaub 651?
The Schaub 651 is supplied for an 8/32 by 1 inch machine screw, which is the common cabinet knob thread, so most single-hole round knobs such as the Deltana KRB175 or the Orca CK-18032 Mission round knob mount into the same drilled hole. Confirm screw length against your door or drawer front thickness, since a thicker front or an added panel may need a longer screw than the one packed with the knob.
12) The Schaub 651 only comes in Aged Dover. What if I need a different finish across the kitchen?
The 651 Fair Isle Imperial Shell knob is offered in the Aged Dover finish. If the job needs another finish family, the Emtek 8665 Select and the Emtek Allerton cabinet knobs are separate series carried in their own finish ranges, as are the Orca CK-19032 Whistler and CK-18032 Mission round knobs. Standardize the whole run on one of those series rather than mixing a single Aged Dover inlay knob into a different finish.
13) What finish does the Schaub 651 Fair Isle knob come in?
Aged Dover (AD) is the finish, and it is the only one offered on the 651 Fair Isle shell knob. If you need the rest of the room to match, pull other pieces from the Symphony Inlays styling in the same Aged Dover rather than trying to blend a different brass tone.
14) I need something that works as both a knob and a small pull. Is the Schaub 651 the right choice?
The Schaub 651 is specified as a cabinet knob, a single-screw round knob 1-1/2 inch across. If you want a piece catalogued for knob or pull duty, the Emtek 8665 Select, Allerton, Art Deco, and Astoria Glass cabinet knobs are each listed with a cabinet knob/pull function.
