Schaub 655-PN – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will a 1-1/2 inch knob be too big for my cabinet doors?
At 1-1/2 inches across, the 655 is a statement-size knob rather than a small utility knob. It suits full-height doors and wide drawer fronts. On narrow drawers or glass-front mullion doors it can crowd the rail. If you want something a touch larger and plainer, the Deltana KRB175 is a 1-3/4 inch solid brass round knob with a groove; for a smaller traditional look, Orca Hardware's CK-18032 Mission round knob is the simpler option.
2) Can the Schaub 655 knob go straight into my existing knob holes?
Yes, in most cases. It is a single-hole round knob using an 8-32 screw, which is the same hole and thread as nearly every standard cabinet knob, so it drops into existing knob bores with no new drilling. What it will not do is replace a two-hole pull, since there is only one fastener point and the 3/4 inch base will not cover a second hole.
3) What is a plain solid brass cabinet knob to use instead of the Schaub 655 Fair Isle when the mother of pearl inlay is not wanted?
The Schaub 655 is a 1-1/2 inch round knob in solid brass with a white mother of pearl Imperial Shell inlay. For the same material without the shell inlay, the Delaney Solid Brass Cabinet Knob is an undecorated solid brass knob, and the Deltana KRB175 is a heavy-duty solid brass round knob with a groove detail at 1-3/4 inch diameter. The Deltana runs 1/4 inch larger in diameter than the Schaub, so on a run of narrow drawer faces or stiles check the face width before swapping.
4) How far does the Schaub 655 knob stand off the cabinet face?
Projection is 1-3/8 inches from the face of the door or drawer, with a 3/4 inch base where it meets the wood. The knob head itself is 1-1/2 inches in diameter. Worth checking against tight inside corners or an adjacent appliance panel, since 1-3/8 inches is a fairly full projection for a knob.
5) What is the Schaub 655 knob actually made of, and is the shell real?
Solid brass body with a white mother of pearl inlay, described by Schaub as Imperial Shell. It is part of the Symphony Inlays style in the Fair Isle collection, so the shell is a genuine inlaid material rather than a printed or applied finish. Being a natural material, expect some variation in the shell pattern piece to piece.
6) Which finishes does the Schaub 655 Fair Isle knob come in?
Two: Polished Brass (PB) and Polished Nickel (PN). Both are polished, so if the rest of your kitchen is in a satin or brushed finish this knob will read brighter than the surrounding hardware. Pick PB to sit with warm-tone faucets and lighting, PN for cool tones.
7) I need to match the Schaub 655 across a whole kitchen or a run of units. What else is in the same look?
The 655 is a Symphony Inlays piece in the Fair Isle collection, so the matching route is other Symphony inlay hardware in the same finish. Schaub inlay designs are also carried under the Emtek Schaub Collection, including the Emtek 8665 Select cabinet knob, the Allerton, the Art Deco, and the Astoria glass knob, if you want a coordinating but different decorative head on other cabinets. Order all of one finish in a single go so the polished brass or nickel matches across the run.
8) Is a mother of pearl inlay knob suitable for a rental or high-traffic commercial job?
For heavy-turnover multifamily or commercial MRO work, a plain solid brass knob is the safer spec. The 655 carries an inlaid white mother of pearl face, a natural material meant for residential and hospitality millwork where appearance matters. If you want solid brass with nothing inlaid to chip or dull, look at the Deltana KRB175 heavy-duty round knob or a plain Delaney solid brass cabinet knob.
9) Which cabinet knob has a decorative inlay similar to the Schaub 655 Fair Isle?
The Schaub 655 belongs to the Symphony Inlays style, where a shell or stone center is set into a solid brass round body. The closest look in another line is the Emtek Astoria Glass Cabinet Knob from the Schaub collection, which uses a glass center rather than shell. If you want an all-metal decorative face instead, the Emtek Art Deco and Emtek Allerton cabinet knobs are patterned metal knobs in the same Schaub collection.
10) For a rental turn or a large multi-family cabinet refresh, is there a simpler knob than the Schaub 655?
The Schaub 655 is a decorative solid brass knob with a mother of pearl inlay, which suits a feature kitchen more than a high-turnover unit. For a straightforward round knob across many units, the Orca Hardware CK-18032 Mission round cabinet knob and the Orca CK-19032 Whistler cabinet knob are both plain cabinet knobs, and the Deltana KRB175 is a heavy-duty round knob in solid brass. All mount the same way a knob does, through a single hole in the door or drawer face.
11) Will the mounting screw from the Schaub 655 work with the other cabinet knobs I am considering?
The Schaub 655 ships with an 8/32 by 1 inch machine screw, which is the standard cabinet knob thread in North America. The Delaney Solid Brass Cabinet Knob, the Deltana KRB175 round knob, and the Orca CK-18032 Mission and CK-19032 Whistler knobs are all single-hole cabinet knobs that install the same way through the door or drawer face. Screw length still has to match your face thickness, so on thicker doors or if you are going over an applied panel, confirm the length you need before mixing knobs on one job.
12) The Schaub 655 projects 1-3/8 inch. What is an option with less reach for a tight walkway or appliance clearance?
The Schaub 655 has a 1-3/8 inch projection off the face with a 3/4 inch base. Where a knob is catching a hip or a neighboring appliance door, a lower-profile round knob is the fix: the Orca CK-18032 Mission and Orca CK-19032 Whistler are simple round cabinet knobs, and the Deltana KRB175 is a round knob with a groove in solid brass. Verify the projection on the model you pick against your clearance before you commit the run.
