Schlage 35-101 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Which Schlage keyways does the 35-101 key blank come in?
The Schlage 35-101 blank is cut in nine keyways: C, CE, E, EF, F, FG, G, H and L. C is the standard Schlage keyway most residential and light commercial cylinders use; the rest are the Everest and sectional/multiplex keyways used where a building is keyed to a restricted or separated section. Order the letter that matches the keyway stamped on your cylinder or on the existing key bow, since a blank from the wrong section will not enter the plug.
2) Will a Schlage 35-101 blank work on my 5-pin Schlage lock, or do I need a 5-pin blank?
A 6-pin blank like the 35-101 cuts fine for a 5-pin cylinder as long as the keyway matches. The blade is long enough to carry six cut positions, so a locksmith simply leaves the sixth position uncut. Going the other way does not work: a 5-pin blank is too short to reach the sixth pin in a 6-pin cylinder. If you run a mix of 5-pin and 6-pin Schlage cylinders in a building, stocking the 6-pin blank in your keyway covers both.
3) I have Schlage Everest cylinders. Can I use a standard C keyway blank on them?
No. Everest cylinders carry an undercut side milling and a check pin that a classic C blank does not clear, so a C blank will not enter an Everest plug. Schlage's 35-101 blank is offered in the Everest sections as well (C, CE, E, EF, F, FG, G, H, L are the choices), so pick the section letter stamped on your existing key rather than defaulting to C.
4) How do I know which Schlage keyway letter to order for my building?
Read it off a key you already have. Schlage stamps the keyway letter on the bow of the original key, and the cylinder itself is usually marked on the face or the plug. Match that letter to one of the nine sections the 35-101 blank is offered in: C, CE, E, EF, F, FG, G, H or L. If your property has been master keyed, the keyway letter also has to match the section the master system was built on, so pull a key from the same suite rather than a random door.
5) Is the Schlage 35-101 a finished key or does it have to be cut?
It's an uncut blank. The 35-101 ships with a full, uncut blade and has to be duplicated on a key machine or originated to a bitting code before it will operate a lock. Locksmiths and property maintenance shops buy it by the box for on-site duplication; if you need a working key and have no way to cut it, you need a cutting service, not a blank.
6) Can I use a Schlage 35-101 blank to make keys for a Kwikset or a Yale lock?
No. The 35-101 is milled to Schlage keyway sections only (C, CE, E, EF, F, FG, G, H, L), and keyway milling is brand specific. It will not enter a Kwikset, Yale or Corbin plug regardless of how it is cut. For those cylinders you need a blank in that manufacturer's own keyway.
7) What does embossed both sides mean on a Schlage key blank, and does it affect duplication?
Embossing both sides means the bow carries a raised Schlage marking on each face rather than on one side only. It's a stamped bow, not a blade feature, so it has no effect on how the key cuts or how it enters the cylinder. Practically it makes the key readable from either side on a ring, which is why maintenance staff carrying dozens of keys prefer it. The standard bow also fits ordinary key machine jaws and common key rings and tags without modification.
8) Are Schlage 35-101 blanks genuine Schlage or aftermarket?
These are genuine Schlage blanks, not generic equivalents. That matters more than it sounds on key blanks: factory blanks hold the blade thickness and milling tolerance the Schlage plug expects, so they duplicate cleanly and do not bind or wear the wafers. If you are maintaining a keyed system across a property, staying on factory blanks keeps the duplicates consistent with the originals.
